Handoff: Resolve buildtest validation blockage for UrlResolver reconnect fixtures
Written 2026-10-08 08:35 UTC.
RE-VERIFY: This is a write-time snapshot. Run gh pr view 1200 --repo CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver --json state, headRefOid,statusCheckRollup, fetch main, and read the current check details before acting.
Mission summary
The worker was asked to triage https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/pull/1200 and either close it with conclusive obsolete evidence or make the two required checks green. No merging, queue admission, extra pull requests, weakened tests, retries or timeout increases are allowed. The assigned outcome is now NEEDS-DECISION: the fixture work is still applicable, but remote CI ended with destroyed executors and a targeted submission independently failed during upload before running a test.
What was found and done
The full findings follow below. Main does not contain the five-file fixture change. There were no GitHub comments/reviews at query time; earlier notes were preserved in branch commits. The rebase was a no-op and all original commits remain. No source changes, pushes, new CI rounds, deploys, merges or queue admissions were performed.

Open; based on current main; bld-build green; required remote failed |
No code was deployed or published. Git working-tree, stash and local-only-commit sweeps were clean. No source changes exist only locally. Full old CI evidence remains at https://buildtest.kotlin.build/log/raw?id=78dd28b7 and https://buildtest.kotlin.build/run?id=78dd28b7. The complete targeted error and its relevant thread stack are included in this body; ancillary full thread-dump, rendered-page and dependency-cache copies are deliberately omitted because the evidence needed to resume is reproduced here and no test executed.
Next steps
- Re-verify current pull request, main, required checks and buildtest state.
- Orchestrator decides whether to assign a separate infrastructure investigation/recovery (recommended), or expand this lane to investigate the published CLI/buildtest implementations. The current scope forbids fixes in another repository or extra pull requests.
- Determine why the old coordinator retained TESTING after all executors were destroyed while queued work remained, and why the independent uploadChunk submission failed after the CLI's five built-in attempts. These are observed failures, not proven to share one cause.
- Once the actual mechanism is explained and repaired, resume first-attempt targeted testing of the five changed scenarios, then the required checks. Do not rerequest CI just to seek a pass, and do not claim the old zero-duration incomplete rows are assertion failures.
- Finish in GREEN with both required checks on the final head and accurate description, or re-evaluate obsolescence with new conclusive evidence. Never merge or enqueue.
Reusable operational knowledge
build-watchman --run <old id> --once only sees the latest 100 API runs; RESULT PENDING exit=0 does not mean green for an older run. Use its direct details page/raw log for historical evidence. The api/test-results endpoint rejected page=0 (HTTP 400) and repeatedly returned HTTP 503 for bounded page=1 requests; api/test-progress and raw log reads worked. The selected remote test never received a run ID because upload failed. The automatic retries printed by the published CLI and old coordinator were not worker-requested retries.

Plan
- [in progress] Read all pull request discussion, diff, required documentation, README and main history; record triage verdict before branch changes.
- [pending] If conclusively obsolete, comment with evidence and close only this pull request.
- [pending] Otherwise rebase, explain required-check failures, reproduce and fix within the stated limits, then verify targeted tests and push.
- [pending] Verify final required checks or record a concrete needs-decision question; finish summary and process cleanup.
OBSERVED: Repository search found CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver, described as “Universal URL resolver for opening connections to various services via url:// protocol.” Fresh clone and read-only evidence collection started. No code or branch changes made.
DECISION: The assigned scope is one pull request, with no merging, extra pull requests, or changes to test limits. No subagents will be used. The status-report skill is read; this session exposes no cron scheduling tool, so recurring reporting will be maintained in the active turn. The user’s required closing-summary format takes precedence over that skill’s general report format.
Triage — 2026-10-08 08:30 UTC
DECISION: SALVAGEABLE. No conclusive obsolete evidence. Main at https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/commit/4fe061512ba91888439a2cf10608631bb99b6121 still disconnects the server directly and waits only for its local close latch in tests/testQuietParameterObservableSurvivesTransportReconnect.kts:87–92. It lacks the accepted disconnect-control request and client rpc.isClosed assertions in this pull request. The new tests/testQuietParameterReconciliationInterruptedByDisconnect.kts does not exist on main. The other three modified fixtures also remain.
OBSERVED: git log --oneline origin/main -- <all five touched paths> lists only https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/commit/28e146a25653ef8c177862a4e4b2276f5f443d83 (“Pin UrlResolver to UrlProtocol 0.0.551”), https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/commit/749feb03676c08d46cac7df6bab418feda088c37 (“Measure testFindPeersForServiceDeadlineIncludesBlockedRpcWrite from the lookup's own deadline origin”), and https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/commit/78b23e73cc9a6c94e5b3c2c5accb3788eaf1125d (“Fix eight lifecycle and release defects in the service handler chain”). None applies this closure-barrier correction.
OBSERVED: Read the complete five-file pull request diff and description. Its quoted premise is “Server onClose does not establish that the client reader has observed EOF”. README’s RPC section permits ambiguous outcomes after writes begin; its observable section requires quiet retained parameters to survive reconnect and grace expiry. The fixture correction adds an explicit admitted control-call outcome before checking independent recovery, and leaves the existing retention assertions intact.
OBSERVED: GitHub gh pr view reports no comments or reviews. Paginated REST issue-comments and pull-review-comments endpoints both return []; pull metadata explicitly reports comments=0 and review_comments=0. The assignment’s earlier-comment dates are not supported by the current API; prior investigation notes instead appear in the 17 branch commits and description. The open-pull scan found related https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/pull/1178, which uses a different client-closure wait, but no explicit supersession of this item. I did not modify any other pull request.
OBSERVED: Required bld-build succeeds at https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/actions/runs/37428772222/job/112154435174. Required remote run https://buildtest.kotlin.build/run?id=78dd28b7 fails: “Build watchdog detected that run '78dd28b7' is still in TESTING status after every assigned droplet was durably recorded as destroyed”. Its page records ten destroyed executor IDs and “A run in TESTING cannot make further progress without an assigned executor, so it has been marked as FAILED.” Informational kompile-remote-build remains pending; it will not be awaited. This explains the terminal status, but not yet why executor completion and coordinator state diverged. No source fix is proposed from that symptom.
OBSERVED: Required reading completed: PHILOSOPHY.md (63 lines), architecture/TESTING.md (1025 lines), repository README overview/building, raw RPC reconnect/replay contract and transparent observable transport. No repository AGENTS.md exists. No branch/code changes before this verdict.
Plan: triage COMPLETE; obsolete closure NOT APPLICABLE; rebase and diagnosis IN PROGRESS.
08:30 UTC — rebase and failure evidence
OBSERVED: Fresh clone completed. Fetch/checkout/fetch/rebase reports “Current branch wip/laneQR47-quiet-param-reconnect is up to date.” Main remains 4fe061512ba91888439a2cf10608631bb99b6121 and branch head remains 6c22921fb8da7d5939a0152c09aa75327b42f7a3. No conflicts, source changes, or pushes.
OBSERVED: Started scripts/test.bash --remote --test testQuietParameterObservableSurvivesTransportReconnect under a captured timeout PID with a 30-minute outer deadline and captured log/exit files. The client reached buildtest health={result=OK}; no test verdict yet. This outer deadline bounds the command, not an edited test timeout.
OBSERVED: Full failed-run log downloaded from https://buildtest.kotlin.build/log/raw?id=78dd28b7. Its final issued lease at 2026-10-06 12:47:10 still says “1154 unit(s) remaining”; no completion follows. The current progress endpoint reports 732 passed and 1160 failed of 1892, with 1160 missing CPU measurements. The initially rendered page showed many failure rows with duration=0ms and “Test did not complete during build execution.” These represent missing results after run termination, not failing assertion stacks. Historical log also has automatic coordinator “In-run flake re-lease” entries; these are recorded run behavior, not retries I requested.
INFER: The remote run cannot establish whether the five changed tests passed because executor disappearance left much of the manifest incomplete. The concrete terminal mechanism is that the coordinator remained TESTING after all ten durable executor destructions and its watchdog marked the run failed. The reason the executors ended with queued work remains unknown; the available log does not justify changing UrlResolver to compensate. A downstream fixture change cannot repair that execution-lifecycle discrepancy.
OBSERVED: API evidence retrieval encountered page=0 rejection (HTTP 400) and a bounded results page HTTP 503; progress and raw log retrieval succeeded. These are read-only probe failures, not test results. Branch commit histories preserve earlier red/green experiments and separate test/code reviews. No earlier comments are currently exposed by GitHub.
08:33 UTC — decision evidence
OBSERVED: Targeted remote command exited 1 after one manual invocation, before submitting a build run or executing any test. Complete diagnostic output:
Downloading coursier...
Fetching kompile.cli:kompile-cli:0.0.100 from https://kotlin.directory/...
Connecting to url://buildtest/ ...
Connected to url://buildtest/ (health={result=OK})
[FAILED] Remote chunked upload for 'UrlResolver' using session 'a6c23d07' failed after 5 attempts. Last error: foundation.url.resolver.UrlResolutionException: RPC request 'uploadChunk' to service 'buildtest' failed: Persistent RPC connection to service 'buildtest' was closed while requests were still pending.
OBSERVED: The tool printed no full exception stack. A captured jstack from the client while the upload was still waiting placed its main thread in Libp2pHostFactoryKt.writeFramedBufferWithBackpressure → NettyOutputStream.write → Libp2pRpcProtocol.writeMessage → PersistentRpcConnection.doSendRequest → UrlProtocolBuildService.rpc → RemoteBuildWorkspace.submitBuildChunked. This is the CLI’s published transport path, before compiling or running the pull request test. I added no retry: “5 attempts” is built into the published CLI. No test ran, so pass/fail reproduction rates cannot be claimed.
OBSERVED: Build-watchman 0.0.21, raw-run --once, exited 0 with RESULT PENDING because the old run was not among the latest 100 API runs. Its PROBLEM explicitly requires checking the run directly. The direct run page/raw log/progress endpoint above do identify the failed run. I do not interpret watchman’s exit 0 as GREEN. No watcher remains running.
DECISION: NEEDS-DECISION. The branch’s fixture correction is still applicable, but the required remote gate terminated with unexecuted tests and today’s independent targeted upload fails before test execution. Changing tests here would not address either transport/coordinator evidence. Do not re-request CI merely to seek a lucky result. No new code, test limits, assertions, dependency pins, or branch commits were changed. No new CI rounds, merge, queue admission, additional pull requests, production actions or subagents.
Question for the orchestrator: should buildtest upload and executor-lifecycle recovery be handled outside this lane before this unchanged pull request is validated again?
- Option 1 (recommended): assign a separate infrastructure investigation/recovery, then resume this lane with one first-attempt run of each touched test and required-check validation once the actual mechanism is understood and fixed. This preserves the fixture work and avoids using CI as a diagnostic loop, but requires work outside the one-repository scope.
- Option 2: authorize a broader investigation in this lane into the published CLI/buildtest implementations. That preserves investigation continuity, but changes this worker’s scope and may require a separate repository change, which the current brief forbids.
- Closing as obsolete is not supported: the five fixture corrections are absent on main and no explicit supersession was found. A CI rerequest without addressing or explaining the observed failure is not recommended.
OBSERVED: git ls-remote confirms the existing remote branch remains at 6c22921fb8da7d5939a0152c09aa75327b42f7a3. Rebase was a no-op; no push is needed to preserve changes because none were made. All 17 original commits remain. Working tree is clean. No successful targeted result exists to justify a push or a GREEN claim.
DECISION: Read report-challenge SKILL.md but did not invoke its CLI: it explicitly “opens a PR, enqueues it ... waits until merged”, conflicting with this work item’s prohibitions on additional pull requests, queue admission and merging. Infrastructure evidence is recorded here instead. This is an explicit scope limit, not a dismissed failure.
Plan audit: triage DONE (salvageable, with main history and diff evidence); obsolete closure REFUTED; rebase DONE (already current); required failure diagnosis DONE to terminal mechanism, deeper executor cause UNKNOWN; targeted verification ATTEMPTED and failed before tests; fix/push/green cannot be completed within the current scope, NEEDS-DECISION with options above; summary/cleanup IN PROGRESS.
08:34 UTC — final state check
OBSERVED: Re-read GitHub pull metadata: OPEN, head 6c22921fb8da7d5939a0152c09aa75327b42f7a3, branch wip/laneQR47-quiet-param-reconnect. Required checks remain bld-build success / kotlin.build (remote) failure; informational kompile-remote-build pending. git status, stash list, local-only commits and worktree sweep are clean/empty except the single intended checkout. No partial source changes require a push.
OBSERVED: The create-handoff skill was read and a bounded service-health probe started. Its initial output is a closed-channel warning, with no successful health response yet. No handoff was created and no additional repository was cloned. All essential investigation information, including the full targeted failure diagnostic, is already in this required findings file; the historic run log remains available by its direct URL.
