Handoff: Finish full-suite and all-check verification for the UrlResolver stream draft
Written: 2026-10-19 07:59:02 UTC.
RE-VERIFY: This is a write-time snapshot. Run gh pr view 1315 --repo CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver --json state,isDraft, headRefOid,mergeStateStatus, statusCheckRollup, mergedAt and git ls-remote for both linked branches before acting. Current live-check evidence: PR REST verification 2026-10-19 07:55:15 UTC showed OPEN/DRAFT at source 6ca426a5dabe939a94a1d742506cef5bd27d270d; both remote refs were reverified during cleanup at 2026-10-19T07:57:33.554553+00:00. Check states are explicitly timestamped below. All owned runners/watchers have ended.. The code is pushed; the full suite is not verified. A fresh query wins over this document.
Design decisions in force
All quotes below are user direction dated 2026-10-19. None has been superseded.
- “Leave the PR as a draft.”
- “Disk rule: run
df -h / before every clone or build. Stop if free space is under 10 GB. Delete your clone and its ~/.aibuildcaches entries when you finish.”
- “Clone fresh. Use
~/bin/cs, never /usr/local/bin/coursier. The remote build service (url://buildtest/) is recovering after a restart, so run tests LOCALLY until --remote works. Record first-attempt counts from the runner XML.”
- “Never raise timeouts, reduce iterations, or weaken/delete assertions or tests. A failing existing test is evidence: compare it against main with matched first-attempt counts. If you believe an existing test is genuinely wrong, stop and write that up with evidence; do NOT change it.”
- “Before pushing:
git fetch origin && git rebase origin/main, confirm the PR is OPEN, and push with --force-with-lease. End each commit with Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>. Edit descriptions only through REST (gh api -X PATCH .../pulls/<n> -F body=@file), keeping the opening why-paragraph, and read the body back.”
- “Do NOT mark ready, merge, enqueue, publish or deploy. Every background wait has a hard deadline; wait on a PID, never
pgrep -f.”
- “Write progress to
out/r68-findings.md as OBSERVED <UTC> — … lines. About 2 hours.”
- Task acceptance criterion: “Prove each new test fails without the fix (revert the core change, run, then restore). Tighten any assertion that would also pass on the unfixed code, such as a range where an exact value is meant.”
The nine direct/legacy compatibility tests are expected to pass on main because they check that existing behavior remains intact. The blanket reading that every added test must fail against main is refuted for those guards by their purpose and matched-main results; the feature tests and targeted mutations supply red evidence for the changed behavior.
Mission summary
TinySite returned 502 pages during the 2026-10-18 outage. The reported failure was that relay forwarding closed the provider reply substream just after returning a stream marker, before later pulls could read the returned source. The work was to reproduce and fix that behavior at the UrlResolver layer, keep direct and legacy stream behavior intact, and prove the changed paths with first-attempt tests. The user’s exact TDD requirement is quoted above.
The local candidate now binds a relayed returned stream to the signed original caller’s peer identity and resolver session, rather than the one-request gateway transport. Provider admission verifies the original raw request before observable wrappers transform its parameters. The signed proof binds destination, method, parameters and metadata. A signed direct-control marker lets the same owner recover a relay marker after route promotion without changing ordinary direct-stream controls. The digest normalizes numbers using the pinned protocol decoder so the signature survives JSON number conversion.
What was found and done
-
A forwarded reply substream closing destroyed the returned-source marker. The provider registers a returned stream with the serving RPC connection. Transit relay requests use a one-request provider RPC; its reply substream closes after the marker is returned, so the later __stream_pull reaches an already removed marker. The unchanged-main feature controls, including the one-shot returned-stream test, fail because reply closure removes the returned source. The final 43-selector run passes the transit lifetime tests. The distinct route-recovery regression is described next.
-
Switching from relay to a recovered direct route changed the control connection identity. The marker was owned by the verified relay caller, while the promoted direct RPC had a different connection identity and could not pull the marker. The caller now signs the direct-control request, including its opt-in marker; provider verification checks caller, session, destination, method, parameters and metadata, and the original owner can continue pulling after promotion. The route test failed 2/2 times on the pre-fix PR head and passes in the final run.
-
Provider admission ran after an observable wrapper changed the signed wire parameter. The provider saw DerivedObservable where the signature covered the raw observable marker and reported Cannot encode forwarded RPC value of type ...DerivedObservable. Moving admission ahead of the wrapper gives verification the original wire value; the real transit observable test then passes.
-
JSON number decoding changed signed values across the hop. The new exponent-number case failed in two independent pre-fix candidate caches, neither using unchanged main, with Original caller signature does not match the forwarded RPC request. The digest builder now uses the existing protocol number conversion on both signing and verification, matching the provider’s already-existing decimal-to-Double conversion. The numeric case passes in the final exact-head batch.
-
Ownership and compatibility guards were mutated independently. One control build removed three independent predicates: destination binding, direct-control opt-in, and session equality. Each selected test failed once at its corresponding intended assertion. These changes were confined to the control checkout and restored after the mutation run; the primary checkout kept the real source and completed the final 43-test run. The same-peer/different-session test creates separate UrlProtocol2 instances with a shared keySeed, denies the foreign pull and close, and verifies the original owner can drain the payload with exact close counts.
-
The shared-clock test has a possible but unobserved teardown race. testReviewSlowStreamReleaseDoesNotBlockSharedClock.kts counts closeFinished down inside InputStream.close() before release-worker bookkeeping finishes; its unrelated timer callback does not prove cleanup bookkeeping ended before onShutdown(). onShutdown() can report that cleanup is still in progress. This remains a static concern, not an observed failure. The teardown is unchanged; the test was strengthened only to require cleanup to start. If this test is confirmed wrong, the user requires stopping and reporting the evidence rather than changing the existing test.
-
Nine compatibility checks intentionally pass on main. The main control has 15 feature failures plus three initially weak feature passes; those three were strengthened, and then failed main at the intended owner-drain/cleanup assertions. Thus 18 original behavior tests fail on main after strengthening. The nine direct/legacy guards pass main as expected. Do not treat those passes as missing feature-red evidence or alter their expected behavior.
-
Two address tests reproduce a separate environment issue. With PUBLIC_IP=203.0.113.7, both active-query address selectors fail on final head and unchanged main with expected 127.0.0.1 versus actual 203.0.113.7. With PUBLIC_IP unset, they pass in the matched probes and in the final focus batch. Do not change these existing tests in this stream fix; the mismatch is also associated with the separate announce-address work described under related changes.
-
Focused verification completed; the full-suite attempt did not. Exact source head 6ca426a5dabe939a94a1d742506cef5bd27d270d has 43 unique first-attempt passes, no failures and no retries. The three guard mutations produced three intended first-attempt failures. The complete-suite attempt exhausted the imposed 768 MB compiler heap while analyzing unchanged testPersistentConnectionAutoReconnectsWithManualClock.kt, then reached its 1200-second bound. Its JSON says INTERRUPTED with zero tests run; no XML exists. This was our validation setting, not a demonstrated repository test failure. The full compiler stack is preserved remotely. No full-suite pass claim is made.
-
The reviewed candidate was pushed and its draft description read back. A final fetch/rebase was a no-op on main 046396a677e14cf950dc7c3d102cbc2c187b75a1; the PR was verified OPEN/DRAFT at the expected old head before the force-with-lease push. git ls-remote then confirmed final head 6ca426a5dabe939a94a1d742506cef5bd27d270d. The description was edited only through REST, read back exactly, and its original opening why-paragraph was preserved. The current CI snapshot is recorded below, separately from the local test proof.
Historical and selected failure counts
The selected historical failures each passed once on both the original PR head and unchanged main under the default environment. That sample did not reproduce those old CI failures and does not prove they were unrelated. The final 43-selector run also passed all 11 selected probes on first attempt. Two address selectors separately failed once each on both main and final head when PUBLIC_IP=203.0.113.7 was set.

The three pre-fix admission/route controls are not all equivalent evidence: head-before.xml had 37/38 passes and route recovery failed; admission-red.xml had 3/4 passes and the observable admission failure reached the provider; setup/compile/readiness failures in admission-before.xml and review-before.xml are not defect evidence. head-focus.xml is from pre-numeric-fix head 08d40844d, not the final candidate.
The old remote run 3d092220 reported 478 passed / 10 failed plus a provisioning deadline, but reconciliation was incomplete and the attempt journal was READ_FAILED; those are summary counts, not first-attempt counts. The historical main remote run 0b43fb0d reported 2070 passed / 2 failed; its attempt journal had no first-attempt rows. A fixed-head remote probe failed to dial the buildtest peer before project execution. These old records do not describe final-head CI.

Repository rulesets require only bld-build; this brief also records both remote checks. The all-check watcher stopped with IDLE_TIMEOUT after eight minutes without an observable change. This is not a check failure or a green verdict; automated CI continues. The remote progress endpoint returns HTTP 500: run d0d4be56 is not present in the durable projection. Its raw log also lacked Last-Modified, so executor freshness could not be established. No reruns or server actions were taken.
Cleanup audit: Completed at 2026-10-19T07:57:33.554553+00:00. Both fresh checkouts and their exact two cache directories were removed; every removed path was verified absent. No owned JVM, stash, uncommitted file or local-only branch commit remained. Six source-commit coauthor trailers were checked.

Next steps
- Re-verify the live PR head, draft state, all check conclusions and both remote branch SHAs. Read the original rules above and the linked delegation/testing documents before proceeding. Clone fresh under
workspace/, run df -h / before clone/build, and read the repo README and AGENTS.md if present.
- Finish full-suite validation. The previous full attempt has no test verdict: the imposed compiler heap exhausted during preparation. Use a bounded execution with enough compiler memory for the preparation workload; keep every test timeout, iteration and assertion unchanged. Try one bounded
--remote probe only to establish that the recovering service works, rather than rerunning CI. If tests fail, compare each with main under matched conditions and first-attempt XML counts before deciding whether this PR caused it.
- Observe the checks naturally triggered by the existing push, with a tracked bounded build-watchman. Repository rulesets formally require only
bld-build, but this brief also needs the two remote checks classified; use --all-checks. Do not rerun unchanged CI, delete runs, enqueue, merge, mark ready, publish or deploy. The last tracked watch has been stopped by the cleanup audit; do not assume an old watcher is still observing anything.
- Keep the baseline address mismatch separate. Both named address tests fail once on both source heads with PUBLIC_IP=203.0.113.7 and pass with it unset. The announce-address sibling is related; it does not replace stream ownership. The other eight current remote failures plus the historical synchronous-discovery probe remain unreproduced locally at the recorded matched sample sizes, not proven unrelated.
- Settle the static shared-clock teardown concern with evidence if it matters to review readiness. One focused pass does not refute the identified ordering. If the existing test is confirmed wrong, stop and report it under the user's explicit rule; do not change that existing test or change the production shutdown contract merely to hide the test issue.
- Keep the description current only through REST, preserve the opening why paragraph, and read it back. If code changes, repeat the red/green and independent review work, rebase and confirm OPEN before pushing with force-with-lease, and retain the coauthor trailer.
- After any resumed work, stop all owned runners/watchers and remove the fresh checkouts and only their own cache entries. The forensic branch is deliberately separate from the code branch and must never be merged. Update this canonical Handoff record in place, rather than making a duplicate for the same remaining work.
Reusable / operational knowledge
The evidence directory contains raw XML and an INDEX. In a fresh clone, fetch the evidence branch and use git show origin/notes/r68-draft-verification:review-evidence/r68/<file> to recover records outside the source tree.
head-final-focus.xml: all 43 unique first attempts; first-attempt-counts.json: per-file first counts.
main-control.xml, main-strengthened.xml, main-new-paths.xml: original core-removal/main controls, including the three stronger assertions.
head-numeric-session-red.xml, numeric-session-red.xml: both are pre-numeric-fix candidate source in independent caches, NOT unchanged main.
guard-mutants.xml and r68-guard-mutations.patch: the combined three-predicate control and each intended failure. The real source was restored afterward.
head-public-ip.xml and main-public-ip.xml: matched baseline environment controls.
head-full-result.json, head-full.log, full-run-errors.txt: interrupted full preparation and complete compiler error stack. full-run-threads.txt shows active Kotlin preparation, not completed tests.
r68-complete-source.patch reconstructs the final tree from the recorded main; r68-session-commits.patch replays the six session commits from original PR head 3283f5e9444174dcf4d59ed824c20accda496725. Actual source commits are now also on the feature branch.
- Final code and test reviews name exact source
6ca426a5dabe939a94a1d742506cef5bd27d270d. Code review has no actionable finding; the unobserved test-teardown concern remains explicit.
The earlier remote probe failed after 30000 ms dialing 198.199.106.165:35000 before executing project code. Handoff service health subsequently returned OK; that is not proof the buildtest P2P endpoint recovered. The original old check summaries are not native first-attempt journals. No live deployment or package publication resulted from this effort.
Documents and instructions
Read ~/.claude/CLAUDE.md, the fresh repository README and AGENTS.md if present, and these required documents before resuming:
The review files record their own document reads. No repository AGENTS.md existed in either fresh checkout. The current handoff skill requires the central service; the old PlanRepository handoff README retains an obsolete merge exception, which conflicts with this user's explicit no-merge rule and was not used.
