Handoff: Finish full-suite verification and open the UrlProtocol gossip failure scoring PR
Written 2026-10-20. RE-VERIFY: This is a write-time snapshot. Check the branch with git ls-remote, inspect any PR returned by gh pr list --repo CodexCoder21Organization/UrlProtocol --head fix/gossip-failure-scoring --state all, and read the native result files on the evidence branch before acting. Query remote run 9ec1ec88 directly; the public run listing was stale and omitted it. The final-state note below records the end-of-run verification.
Current continuation — 2026-10-20 15:23 UTC
The new brief p56.md explicitly directs opening a ready-for-review PR and then using its required full-suite checks as validation. This supersedes the earlier full-suite-before-PR ordering below. The owner keeps the existing capped identity retention policy for reputation and reconnects (https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/pull/830). No merging, publishing, deployment or timeout increases.
Fresh clone and fetch/rebase found main and the code head unchanged. Ready-for-review PR opened: https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlProtocol/pull/743 . Required checks are being watched with build-watchman0.0.21, bounded100minutes from15:23UTC (17:03UTC), within the110-minute task limit. Current findings: r56-findings.md.
Design decisions in force
The 2026-10-20 brief requires: “Do (one PR, a new branch fix/gossip-failure-scoring)”. It says: “Bring in only the ‘gossip score’ test from d6aced65a (fails first on main).” The mechanism must be fixed “in one place: each completed gossip/dial failure records negative evidence in the same score history that successes update, with the same bounds and decay as successes. No change to the removal or quarantine semantics beyond that.” Add public-API proof that a single transient failure among many successes does not evict a healthy peer and that documented scoring bounds hold.
“Tests through public APIs only: no reflection, no mocks. Never raise a timeout, cut iterations, or add sleeps or retries as a fix. Every wait has a hard deadline. Stop every process you started; delete clones and caches at the end. No merging, enqueueing, publishing or deploying. Push at each milestone.” The bar requires new/adapted tests to fail first, then pass on their first native recorded attempt, a full suite on the exact pushed head with counts, and required final-head checks green. Stop at a ready-for-review PR; never merge it. The general user instruction requires the full suite before opening a PR. An optional exception was requested but no answer was received; no exception was assumed.
The PR opens with why, quoting the original user request below, followed by mechanism and evidence. Its final line must be 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code). Every commit message ends with Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>.
Mission and scope
The user originally requested: “We need to investigate why https://my.externalbrain.wasmserver.com/ is failing to load and fix the underlying problem.” The original outage was already fixed before this lane. Follow-up investigation found cold ContainerNursery WUI requests spending35–38seconds waiting while network workers entered peer-registry capacity ranking. The registry reached its1000-peer cap with stale identities. This lane addresses one confirmed cause: completed gossip failures did not lower a retained peer's capacity score. It does not establish production cold-request latency and has not deployed anything.
What was found and done
- A fresh clone of UrlProtocol main at
33844fca5c3bcc3296c2198c4768f630f6059f7e imported only tests/testCompletedGossipFailuresLowerRetentionScore.kts from the specified source commit. Fixture byte equality is recorded. The real three-host gossip scenario failed all3 baseline attempts: target retained, healthy control evicted, target successes3→3, failures0→0, score0.7500000000000001 unchanged.
- Source confirms
recordDialFailure updated removal/quarantine bookkeeping but never called the observation log used by score ranking. Five new public scenarios all failed all3 attempts on main (0/5,15failed attempts) because negative history was missing. They cover healthy transient retention at capacity, bounded history/score ranges/recovery and idle invariance, offline/quarantine rules, same-thread removal rejection, and duplicate outcomes during pending removal.
- The minimal hook reuses
observationLog.recordFailure(peerId) under the existing outcome/mutation locks. It runs after pending/quarantine rejection and after the threshold active-action rejection check. Reuse preserves the existing64-check bound, local-online gate, and observation-rank decay. The existing threshold removal path clears history as before.
- Independent code review found that an unguarded hook would create failure records for removed/unknown identities. Its public-API reproducer failed all3 attempts on that candidate. The final hook is guarded by
lifetime != null, leaving unknown-ID dial bookkeeping/quarantine behavior unchanged while creating no score history. The test covers late failure after removal plus256 never-retained identities. Final independent code and test reviews report no remaining findings.
- Final code head passed all10 focused tests on their first recorded attempts (seven new tests plus three existing threshold/lifetime/concurrency neighbors), including the real gossip scenario. Native result/log and attempt audit are archived. Full-suite and required-check completion remain separate gates; consult the final-state note for their eventual outcome.

Earlier code milestones are ancestors of the final head: exact failing fixture, five red scenarios, and final guarded fix.
No code was deployed, published, merged, or enqueued by this lane. Actions were limited to local work/tests, branch pushes, owned remote build submission/status, read-only service probes, and eventual owned-run cleanup. No production reconciliation is needed.
Next steps
- Re-verify current state first, including final-state note, exact remote head, PR existence/state, and native full-suite outcome. Clone fresh under your own workspace. Read root README/instructions and testing architecture and engineering philosophy.
- If a complete exact-head full pass is absent, fetch/rebase on latest main and run the documented full suite once under a suitable hard task deadline:
scripts/test.bash --remote --test . --log <outside-clone-log> --result-file <outside-clone-json>. Local fallback is --local, with only one full local suite machine-wide. Do not reuse an interrupted run as a passing result. If any test fails, reproduce and fix locally; prove it on main before calling it unrelated. Do not blindly requeue CI.
- Native logs list retry attempts in an
Attempt history section. audit-native-results.py and native-attempt-audit.json show baseline18failed attempts, unguarded absence3failed attempts, and final focused10single passing attempts. Preserve native records and audit new tests again against full results.
- Once full verification permits PR creation, fetch/rebase immediately before creating it, ensure exact head has full proof, check for existing PRs, and use the preserved
pr-body.md after replacing its pending lines with actual counts. Suggested title: Record completed gossip failures in retained peer scores. Quote the original user request and keep the required footer. Open exactly one PR and do not merge/enqueue.
- Watch final-head required checks
bld-all-tests and bld-build with published build-watchman0.0.21, a tracked process and hard deadline. Gate on required checks, poll GitHub at most once a minute, and act on concrete failures. Recent main all-tests runs took42–48minutes; do not assume a shorter gate. Ready means full suite and required checks actually green.
- Stop owned processes and remove the new clone/job cache. Keep durable evidence on the evidence branch, update this handoff, and mark it complete only once the ready-for-review bar is met.
Operational knowledge and evidence
All evidence is under handoffs/artifacts/r53 on the evidence branch. Important files: baseline.log/json, baseline-registry.log/json, unguarded-absent.log/json, guarded-local-focused.log/json, native-attempt-audit.json, final-source-manifest.json, final-review.patch, code-review.md, test-review.md, pr-body.md, and r53-findings.md. Build outputs and dependency caches are deliberately excluded.
Remote full run 9ec1ec88 was accepted at the exact final head with2591tests. Its default30-minute wait expired with native PENDING,0/0 and exit2. --remote --attach 9ec1ec88 is a read-only one-shot, not a new suite, and also returnedPENDING. At06:45 a direct getBuildRun RPC confirmed ADMISSION_WAIT_STARTED, no droplet/executor, and zero results. The public WUI listing was explicitly stale and build-watchman could not find this run among its100projected records. Absence there does not refute the direct record. A source-backed public-API helper OwnRemoteRun.java obtains status or cancels only this hardcoded run using cancelBuildRun, preserving logs; deleteBuildRun removes evidence and was not used. See remote-cancel-procedure.md for official source links and final-state note for cancellation outcome.
The first attempt to obtain a sandboxed monitoring API failed with OUTBOX_FULL while fetching implementation bytecode; full stack in remote-monitor.log. The direct persistent RPC path worked. That is an operational observation, not a source diagnosis or a test failure. HandoffCLI0.0.8 health attempts failed from this client while ContainerNursery listed the handoff service RUNNING; full logs are preserved. No restart was attempted. The challenge publisher auto-merges an additional PR, conflicting with this lane's no-merge/one-PR rule, so friction is recorded on the evidence branch instead.
Final-state note — 2026-10-20 07:01 UTC
The exact-head local full suite reached its original45-minute command cap. Tracked command exit124; native result INTERRUPTED, modeLOCAL, tests0/0, failed0, exit143. Test child JVMs had executed, but no completed native attempt log or aggregate count was returned. This0/0 is an interruption record, not a passing or empty completed suite. Native full-local-suite.json and complete console are saved. A terminal-memory-record warning occurred during execution, but no complete test verdict establishes whether any test failed; do not label it unrelated without proving it on main.
Remote run9ec1ec88 remained in admission wait with2591tests and no executor. One supported cancelBuildRun call timed out waiting for its reply; a subsequent authoritative getBuildRun succeeded and proves statusCANCELED, completedAt1792479598275, no droplet, and the recorded cancellation reason. No retry or delete was sent; logs/record remain. The source-backed status/cancel helper and full stacks/responses are preserved. Watcher exitedIDLE_TIMEOUT5 and is stopped. Local suite process and its test workers are stopped; final process audit and clone/cache deletion will be recorded in r53-findings.md.
Final code branch remote head is3c11e57f05e0fb5a85e472eb56386d8bea6436ef; main remains33844fca5c3bcc3296c2198c4768f630f6059f7e. Working tree is clean, with no stash, local-only commit or extra worktree. Fresh GitHub query at07:00 returned no PR and no check runs for this head. Thus no PR was opened, full-suite proof and required CI are unfinished, and the ready-for-review bar has not been met. The optional early-PR ordering exception had no reply and was not assumed. All code and necessary proof are pushed; pick up at full-suite verification, then PR creation/checks. No deployment/publication/merge/enqueue occurred.
