Handoff: Finish UrlResolver verification and consume the upstream long-poll admission release

Updated 2026-10-21 16:34 UTC by S45; prior S32 evidence remains recorded below. RE-VERIFY: This is a write-time snapshot. Design decisions in force

The original user asked for end-to-end extreme-condition tests that fail first and fixes for the bugs found. The 2026-10-21 S32 brief resolves the previous authorization questions, verbatim:

A. Cancellation-contract tests — AUTHORIZED. The user decided "run to completion" (Option A): when a caller cancels or goes away (disconnect, losing a direct-vs-relay race, coroutine cancellation by the client — the server cannot tell these apart), the server frees the slot, lets the handler finish and discards its result; it does not interrupt the handler. Only a caller interrupting its OWN thread keeps main's behaviour. Existing tests that assert the old interrupt-on-departure behaviour (the six EffectResponseCloseWith* variants, EffectAwareCoroutineCancellationInterruptsDelegate, ResolverCloseJoinsActiveEffectCompletion, both NonNatRace* cancellation tests, and any others the full suite shows) are to be REWRITTEN to assert the new contract: handler not interrupted, runs to completion (bounded by the 30 s deadline), result discarded, slot released, caller gets its cancellation outcome. Never delete or disable a test. For each edited test list before/after and why, and show the rewritten test fails on a build that interrupts on departure (or leaks the slot). Tests whose purpose is unrelated to departure-interruption must keep their assertions. B. Upstream permit — handled separately: a UrlProtocol lane is fixing the process-wide 64-request permit held across suspended handlers (Libp2pHostFactory). Do NOT work around it in UrlResolver. 1163's end-to-end starvation tests (P2) will pass only after that UrlProtocol release and the pin bump; leave them in place, and state in the PR description that P2's end-to-end check depends on that release. C. Inherited ownership bug — fix it here: testEffectAwareCancellationAfterNextEffectSignalReclaimsSession ("Cancellation left the next request effect waiting") fails on main too. Find the mechanism and fix it with that test as the reproducer. D. "Accepted-result and final-handoff ownership" — the previous lane flagged these as unresolved. State precisely who owns an accepted result and its final delivery at each step; any path where a result or session can be left waiting or released twice is a defect to fix with a failing-first test.

Standing constraints: ordinary over-cap work queues FIFO; only server-declared parking reads get a recognizable retry-safe refusal and bounded client backoff. Caps are per service. A delegate that ignores its 30-second deadline interrupt retains its worker until it actually stops. No merge, enqueue, publication, deployment, timeout increase, iteration reduction, skipped/deleted test, reflection or mock is authorized. Only bld-build gates UrlResolver; remote App checks are informational.

Mission and current state

Continuation of https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/pull/1163, starting at49a9680f9de8761835daef1909eb829b371b045e. Current real/checkpoint source is d4cae43ac041692aebf228c42de65b02b853446d, cleanly rebased on main48e9a695a8f0af035e6bb284776ebb849bd98f5a. No content conflicts. Real workflow remains the complete racing suite. Review-head full39603066595 finished2346/2350 with only the four accepted P2 failures. S45 fixed the three review findings and two reproduced interactions in the new cleanup path, adding eleven public tests and editing no pre-existing test bodies or limits. Previous171-case focused passed171/171. Final172-case focused https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/actions/runs/39630369793 passed172/172 with172 exact unique successful XML test records, both build rules successful and zero failed summaries. Exact-final full https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/actions/runs/39630194381 is still testing. No exact-final full attribution or green claim. Previousc46 full39624182449 finished2356/2360, exactly the four accepted P2 failures; it predates the final cleanup-deadline fix/test and does not substitute for exact-final verification. Timebox ends16:38:31 UTC.

What was found and done

  1. Final-handoff cancellation and dispatcher rejection escaped awaitResponse's cleanup after the product response was queued. Pending request effects stayed waiting. Completion and final delivery now retain separate ownership; an undelivered response reclaims its effect without waiting for the caller dispatcher. Actual caller cancellation and the later product result each retain a dispatcher attempt, but share one terminal caller claim; owner close skips its own extra cancellation dispatch. Cancellation admission/observer remain until the OUTER delivery gate, because an ordinary interceptor can accept the inner continuation and hold its final turn. Both outer return paths recheck actual caller cancellation; result extraction preserves dispatcher rejection for active callers. Throwing interceptors also release ownership while retaining existing error reporting.
  2. Resolver close cancelled every wait, including a final value or handler exception already accepted while timer cleanup was held. Final result acceptance now claims against owner close before signalling completion. Accepted outcomes survive owner close; caller cancellation still wins. No caller code runs on completion. Explicit retirement requires queued final handoffs/continuations to return; close itself does not wait for caller code.
  3. Ten existing departure tests required immediate remote/service interruption. Rewritten to enforce the authorized run-to-completion contract, with controlled gates, exact completion/no-interrupt/result-discard assertions and unchanged callback/dispatcher/retirement/error assertions. A public healthy response orders cancellation cleanup; remote caller-interruption coverage observes provider onClose before releasing work.
  4. The relay-adoption stress expected normal selection to close a losing stream, although callService deliberately retains accepted siblings for draining. Its own ten-second response gate expired while it waited for that close. The fixture now explicitly closes the client after adopting the relay result, observes provider cleanup, then checks remote work remains active. Every original assertion, all twenty iterations and all timeouts remain.
  5. Clock.schedule could throw after a release had cleared the pending effect but before completing its future. The worker then remained blocked outside the session table. Release now wakes effect/signal in finally. Shutdown, reap and expiry continue releasing sibling sessions, retire terminal records and preserve all cleanup failures. Supplied sweep cancellation happens after its handle is cleared and outside the sweep monitor.
  6. R1-R4 from S24 remain: independent feed/control executor, current-deadline identity, single FIFO submission owner, retained timer cancellation exactly once and whitespace fix. P2 still needs upstream transport adoption; no downstream allowance workaround or dependency downgrade was added.

Evidence

  • Eleven rewritten departure scenarios fail unchanged main: https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/actions/runs/39596755774 (including the relay-adoption stress at iteration zero with interrupted remote work). Earlier ten-case confirmation: https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/actions/runs/39593586723.
  • Four ownership failures on old source: https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/actions/runs/39592375576. Includes held-dispatch cancellation, refused final delivery, accepted value and accepted exception.
  • Four clock-fault cases fail old release code: https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/actions/runs/39597807336. Cancellation, two-session shutdown, two-session connection reap and expiry all fail their intended worker-stopped assertions.
  • Eleven isolated public probes pass on exact final8f7 source (including held ordinary-interceptor cancellation), trace https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/blob/wip/s32-artifacts/handoff-artifacts/s32/s32-final11-probes.log. Ten earlier probes: all four clock-fault cases, cancellation/rejection ownership, stale timer and existing reap/expiry/shutdown deadline cases. Trace: https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/blob/wip/s32-artifacts/handoff-artifacts/s32/s32-release-fixed-probes.log.
  • Expanded focused https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/actions/runs/39597808046 passed52/52, but coverage audit found thirty unchanged testR1311 cases absent from that selection. Adding them exposed a real exact-dispatch-count regression, not an unrelated failure. The next83-case baseline https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/actions/runs/39601962934 passed81/83 and failed exactly testR1311jCancellationRejectionRemainsAfterRetirement (requires2 dispatch attempts/1 callback) and the new ordinary-interceptor reproducer (effect must be reclaimed before held caller turn runs). Both mechanisms are fixed at the current real head; no legacy test changed. Isolated ordinary-interceptor public test flips from intended failure to PASS. Full traces in the artifacts branch.
  • Final-source83-case verification: https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/actions/runs/39603097877 at f19d612fb5deaddd68420a3ae1819223e6e1d254, source/tests identical to real head except selected workflow. SUCCESS83/83, no failed-attempt diagnostics. Draft CLOSED without merge after log/XML capture.
  • Current full required suite (build passed; test step active13:20UTC): https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/actions/runs/39603066595. Superseded own full runs https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/actions/runs/39597717853 and https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/actions/runs/39600076693 were cancelled13:04 after actual code changes. Their legacy dispatch regression already has deterministic failure and final83 PASS; do not restart obsolete heads. Superseded full https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/actions/runs/39593501872 was cancelled after actual source changed. Historical S24 full https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/actions/runs/39585296550 completed2323/2340 with17 failures: eleven A cases, C, accepted-value D and four P2; every historical failure accounted for. No current-head full green claim.
  • Earlier R1-R4 fail-first/pass: https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/actions/runs/39578661176 and https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/actions/runs/39585403308 (35/35); corrected timer baseline https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/actions/runs/39583527480.
  • P2 fails unchanged main: https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/actions/runs/39600492181 on main48e9/protocol1429:0/4. Four cases: Started/Resumed waits admit 64/65, client-close case admits 64/72, parked observable case delays ordinary work until twenty polls expire.

The exact per-test before/after table and all observed failures are in https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/blob/wip/s32-artifacts/handoff-artifacts/s32/findings.md. No existing assertion outside the authorized contract rewrite was weakened.

Upstream dependency

A separate effort is implementing opt-in long-poll transport admission. Its implementation PR is https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlProtocol/pull/772; original evidence draft https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlProtocol/pull/768 is CLOSED. S33's12:53 findings report ten targeted scenarios, two new retained-response faults with failing-first evidence, fixes pushed and required full-suite gates still pending. There is no publication authority or published release in that snapshot. The new contract will require a release/pin bump AND forwarding server classification through ServiceRoutingHandler/ClockStampingRpcRequestHandler/diagnosticProviderRpcHandler; a pin bump alone is insufficient. Latest artifact metadata seen was 0.0.1429, which is not evidence that this work is released. Do not adopt a guessed version or remove any P2 test.

Important contract mismatch: S33 explicitly preserves ordinary64 for undeclared handlers and adds an allowance only for declared long-polls. Started/Resumed waits and client-close completion P2 cases currently use ordinary ServiceHandler paths yet require65/72 to start. Therefore even a release/pin/classification forward is insufficient for these three as currently declared; the integration owner must reconcile contract/declarations without weakening counts/assertions. Fourth P2 is actual declared observable parking. This is an evidence-backed refutation of the brief's pin-alone sufficiency, not a downstream workaround. All four tests remain unchanged.

Final ownership boundaries

Resource Owner and terminal boundary
Running handler / held worker The accepted task retains its physical worker until it stops; departure releases the response wait and discards late output. Its current30-second deadline still bounds work; a delegate ignoring interruption retains the slot.
Pending effect response Session and final-delivery wait own it until successful outer delivery. Inner continuation resumption does not transfer it to the client. Cancellation or refusal independently abandons it once, even while the caller turn is held.
Accepted final value / exception The wait atomically claims against owner close before deadline cleanup. Close cannot replace an already accepted outcome. Explicit caller cancellation still wins before delivery.
Product completion / delivery lease Each phase ends separately and exactly once. Completion can retire while a caller handoff remains owned. Final lease closes cancellation admission under its enqueue lock before notification-pool shutdown.
Deadline cleanup Replaced handles lose authority; failed registration still completes pending effect/signal in finally. Multi-session release continues all siblings and retains failures.

S45 fix round (2026-10-21)

Assigned rules, verbatim: R1. Every resource produced by work whose result is discarded (streams, observables, any registered handle) is released when the result is discarded — never left until shutdown. R2. Reclaiming a cancelled pending effect never waits on unrelated callers or callbacks; locks guard data only (no lock or wait held across callbacks). R3. A failure while registering one deadline never stops the periodic expiry of other sessions; the failure is reported (effect/notification), not swallowed. R4. Everything already proven (P1, P3–P7, rewritten departure tests, ownership fixes) still holds — re-run the focused set. Four P2 tests remain unchanged, accepted pending the separate UrlProtocol release.

The review found three mechanisms at8f7f771f: registered return resources were lost when their marker result was discarded; pending-effect cancellation queued cleanup on the same four workers running arbitrary held inline callbacks; and a failed abandoned-work deadline bypassed the scheduled sweep's next registration. Permanent public tests force each exact ordering/fault.

The fix gives each handler execution a coroutine-carried registration owner through the real stream/observable/projection wrappers. Successful final delivery transfers ownership; abandoned/undeliverable results release every generated registration outside the owner lock. Production finishes and discarded-resource cleanup occurs before returning its physical worker and signalling the outcome, after Effective restores its reporting scope. Stream aliases share the existing exactly-once release; failed closes stay owned for shutdown retry and are reported with original failures. Projection tokens share pending-response owners and a delivered-client owner, and generation identity protects unsubscribe/recreate races. Client-supplied parameter IDs and command-outcome records retain their existing caller ownership; deleting command outcomes would violate P4's no-reexecution rule.

Cancellation reclaims the pending effect directly outside its delivery admission lock; caller dispatch behavior stays unchanged. Scheduled expiry rearms surviving sessions before emitting HandlerLifecycleFailedWarningEffect with the original failure, preserving the scheduler thread. README/PR describe these contracts. No pre-existing test body or limit changed in S45; nine new tests added. The new expiry test was strengthened to exact notification text/original throwable. The new failed-close fixture was corrected to preserve its primary assertion through old-code shutdown cleanup; the discarded cleanup failure is attached and its retained source reclaimed.

Evidence:

  • Original three assertion failures: https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/actions/runs/39614871040.
  • Six-case baseline (late mixed resources, cancelled/refused final handoffs, projection token, R2/R3): https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/actions/runs/39615705676; all6 fail at intended oracles.
  • Final warning-aware/corrected-cleanup baseline: https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/actions/runs/39619648898 onb0e83f2d02; all7 compile and fail. Warning declarations are present solely so the test compiles; every existing production file remains byte-identical to8f7f771f. The failed-close test now fails its exact missing-warning assertion, retaining cleanup failures as suppressed. The R3 test fails because the original injected clock error escapes instead of a notification. Complete immutable job log is preserved in the artifacts branch; GitHub run status can lag its completed jobs, so use actions/jobs/119289362944/logs if gh run view says in progress.
  • Source-only compilation and all9 public scenarios pass with full shutdown. First runner focused92/92: https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/actions/runs/39618179698, no failed-attempt diagnostics. Its implementation source is byte-identical to final1b3956d858; only a test cleanup correction followed.
  • Final170-case focused: https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/actions/runs/39619771123 on0920685f4b. Source/tests identical to real1b3956d858; only evidence workflow selection differs. Pending.
  • Exact-final full: https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/actions/runs/39619733659 on1b3956d858. Build passed; full tests running. Pending, no failure pre-attribution.

S45's dedicated test and implementation review passes are recorded in its incremental findings. All own superseded workflows were cancelled after test-fixture updates; no blind retry. Informational App lost-dispatch warnings were ignored without rerequest. No local kompile suite was run; cached source-only probes are supplemental, and runner verification is authoritative.

Follow-up found in dedicated review

At1b3956d858 a failed warning renderer could escape resource cleanup before the accepted exception's completion signal. Because complete=true had already revoked deadline recovery, the caller then waited indefinitely. The public test registers a stream, fails observable initial calculation, and makes the close failure's message accessor throw. Local old-source and runner https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/actions/runs/39622630532 contain the exact hung-caller AssertionError plus the injected worker reporting failure. The later assertions were corrected to the documented RPC exception envelope after calculation notifications; the unchanged hung-caller oracle still fails before those assertions. Corrected current-source baselinec9ba40d0a7 at https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/actions/runs/39624189795 compiled and failed with the exact hung-caller AssertionError plus injected worker reporting error; complete job log preserved. Draft1378 is CLOSED.

Fixc46c7b0f03 attempts all cleanup stages before signalling accepted outcomes and retains original close/reporting failures. The fixed standalone public test passes with exact exception type/message, retained notifications and all original cause objects; shutdown retries the retained source. Ten S45 public tests now, no pre-existing test edits. Final source/test-identical171-case focused run https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/actions/runs/39623718423 passed171/171 on1fc5a196a8, with exact XML selection and no failed summaries; final complete suite https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/actions/runs/39624182449 is active onc46c7b0f03. Earlier1b3956d858 full run was superseded/cancelled after the new fix; no final full count/failure attribution yet.

GitHub PR records briefly stayed on old heads despite REST git/ref and ls-remote confirming new refs and no new checks. One close/reopen of real1163 and baseline1378 refreshed each head correctly and dispatched its current-source workflow. No App suite was rerequested. Earlier required run was cancelled only because source changed, never to retry a test failure unchanged.

Operational knowledge

GitHub-runner verification is explicitly required by the brief because local kompile runs can stop before compiling. One 600-second build attempt connected to buildtest, then returned missing local notifications.bin; no more local kompile suites were run. Small isolated compiler/probes use cached artifacts but the resolver-close cases require the runner's current constructor metadata. Build-watchman 0.0.21 plain --pr mode is bounded; never --to-merged. It reports informational App dispatch problems; do not rerequest them. Never run fetch concurrently in worktrees sharing one .git: it can cause remote-ref lock failures. The Handoff service had a temporary zero-peer bytecode lookup/host-stop failure; a bounded retry and claim succeeded. The old decision handoff was updated with the binding S32 decisions and COMPLETED through handoff-cli; do not reopen it. This implementation handoff remains active. A real Git push failed HTTP2 PROTOCOL_ERROR; repo-local http.version HTTP/1.1 and a force-with-lease retry succeeded. Verify ls-remote after every push.

Terminal cleanup verified 2026-10-21 13:32 UTC: own watcher terminated; all S32 local checkouts/worktrees and matching ~/.aibuildcaches entry removed after final remote verification. Final artifacts checkpoint d7859761811f68f0766b05d89edea2bb82254221. No local source work remains. Required full CI was left running on GitHub; no merge/enqueue/publication/deployment.

S45 exact-final checkpoint (16:02 UTC)

Real/checkpoint source is d4cae43ac041692aebf228c42de65b02b853446d. A deadline-row review found that discarded-result cleanup cleared task/abandonedWorkRunning before closing the returned resources, so a blocking cooperative close lost the original deadline interruption. New public test testEffectAwareDiscardedResultCleanupRetainsDeadline fails on unchangedc46 source in https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/actions/runs/39628598086 (branch wip/s45-cleanup-deadline-failfirst, head3218137f19cd79ff9800f0f7fbee0613b1089642, draft https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/pull/1380 CLOSED). Exact oracle: The abandoned request deadline must still interrupt result cleanup that honors interruption. The fix delays only abandoned terminal work completion through resource cleanup; already accepted paths and normal timer-cancel ownership are unchanged. Fixed standalone public probe passes with one close/interrupt, actual worker return and no repeated shutdown close. Eleven added tests, zero edits to pre-existing test bodies or limits.

Claim s45 was RELEASED successfully. Both remote refs re-verified through REST after cleanup.

Before deletion all four own trees were clean, every branch commit reachable from a remote, stash empty. Own watcher843097 stopped and tracked session exited INTERRUPTED130; all own three auxiliary worktrees, fresh clone, matching cache paths and temporary compiler outputs were removed/verified absent. No sibling process/checkout touched. No merge, enqueue, publication or deployment occurred. All four evidence PRs CLOSED, branches retained.

Status BLOCKED / verification incomplete: exact-final full https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/actions/runs/39630194381 is still running and must be attributed. Final focused172/172 PASS; previousc46 full2356/2360, only four accepted P2 failures. Those counts belong toc46, notd4. The overall handoff remains open for final verification and the separately owned upstream P2 release/adoption/ordinary64 contract reconciliation. Do not archive it or reopen the archived aggregate.
