Handoff: Investigate Maven fetch refusals and verify required CI for forwarded completion
Written: 2026-10-21 17:05:11 UTC.
RE-VERIFY: This is a write-time snapshot. Query https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlProtocol/pull/748 for current state/head and required checks, inspect the Actions runs below, and git ls-remote the refs. PR is OPEN/unmerged at 78321b19c5059539a8be76aa5dbeaeef2bd426bb. A fresh query wins.
Design decisions in force — 2026-10-21
Task p115: “Hard rules: NEVER merge, enqueue, publish, or deploy. Never ask the user — decide and record.” “no new timeouts, no sleeps; report via the module's existing late-failure path, never just log-and-drop”. One test JVM invocation at a time; abort above8.5GB cgroup memory or below8GB free disk; no changes to existing timeout/iteration/assertion. The task ends at verified required CI/native attempt audit and cleanup; review/merge is outside it. Hard limit ends17:20UTC; at17:10 checkpoint and update this handoff. Current owned watcher is bounded to17:17UTC to leave cleanup time.
Mission and remaining work
The original work investigates why https://my.externalbrain.wasmserver.com/ was slow after idle. The forwarding-completion PR adds APIs so ContainerNursery can stream large replies. p115 repairs the independent review's remaining low-severity diagnostic defect, verifies it with failing-first public tests and a removed-report mutation, pushes the open PR, and finishes required CI/native first-attempt auditing. Code, local checks, reviews, PR comment/body update and source push are complete. The exact-head CI/native audit and final PR comment/body are now complete. Required build passed, but full-suite CI is red on two unchanged tests that failed during dependency preparation. Remaining work is to investigate the artifact fetch refusal at its source, then obtain required CI confirmation. Cleanup is being completed by r115 before exit. No user question is pending.
What was found and done
- Mechanism proved: after response cancellation or writer interruption starts child close, a held physical write can finish and release the writer before the child-close future fails. The old closeFailures queue was folded only at writer exit; later child/root errors entered a queue with no reader while root teardown continued. Completion timing itself was correct.
- Final standalone public tests use real isolated TCP and libp2p hosts and actual Netty pipeline promises. They hold child close, complete the actual final write, wait for public response completion, then reject child and first root close. Both fail all3 native attempts against unchanged original production5f6f2d3a2: expected both complete diagnostic lines, actual none. Baseline final first/final counts0/2,6/6 attempted failures; native build succeeded.
- The private ForwardedOutputCloseFailures collector serializes record and selection on one monitor, clears consumed failures, and reports later arrivals outside the monitor through the existing late-close reporter. Both normal and interrupt paths select once. Root retirement/normal unsafe close, completion timing, interruption and fatal-priority combination are preserved. No public interface call, wire, persisted state, or deadline changed.
- Local positive gate: each final new test passes five separate FIRST attempts,10/10 total, zero retries. All29 tests previously added by the PR plus the existing late-root reporter control pass once each on first attempts,30/30. Overall selected native validation40/40 first attempts, zero retries; builds green, no resource guard fired. All29 prior PR test files are byte-identical. Source was rebased onto main15bc62a6c and rechecked immediately before push without a head change.
- Mutation: removing only the collector's new late-report call makes both final tests fail all3 native attempts again at absent diagnostics,6/6 failures. Fixed factory SHA256 ebd074c155e895ec8ad1b107bd24e534dca288089eda5f01585bd480e655fb8e and both test hashes are restored exactly. The deliberate control is excluded from the PR.
- Reviews and historical fixture failures: independent test review found setup cleanup began after host construction; final tests put backend and hosts inside try/finally, and re-review is PASS. A separate implementation review passed record/select interleavings, bounded retention, callback/close ordering and error precedence. Earlier drafts expected one interrupt close instead of the actual three cleanup calls, and then expected a bare child IOException instead of libp2p's CompletionException(IOException). All those failed native records/stacks are retained and excluded from final positive counts. Final test bytes are identical across final baseline, mutation and positive runs. README's completion contract remains accurate.
- Prior owner PID2199769 exited; its bounded wait completed normally before any PR-branch push. An explicit force-with-lease against5f6f2d3a25122e02a74cf4cc0148889f53335432 pushed 78321b19c5059539a8be76aa5dbeaeef2bd426bb. git ls-remote verified the exact head. PR comment and appended body carry the same full results; structured REST PATCH and complete readback verified body, OPEN state and exact new head. Existing PR history was preserved.
Current CI snapshot — 2026-10-21 17:04 UTC
Live repository rules require exactly bld-build and bld-all-tests. On new head78321b19c5059539a8be76aa5dbeaeef2bd426bb, required build PASSED, but required full suite FAILED. The plain build-watchman0.0.21 actually exited1 at17:01:27UTC; its receipt is preserved, and no watcher remains active. No CI rerun was issued.
Native artifact: 2891 results,2889 first/final passes,2 preparation failures, zero native test retries. Build-rule records:17/18 passed, one failed external protocol0.0.402 fetch. All31 PR test files have native results and pass FIRST attempt, including both new tests; no scoped result is missing. Artifact summaries and full stacks are in the evidence branch under verification/r115/ci-native-summary.json, ci-pr-scope-summary.json, ci-test_log_file.xml, ci-failure-details.txt and ci-failed-buildrule.xml.
The two unchanged tests are testTcpCloseSettlesReaderJsonAdmission and testLegacyThreeArgumentBytecodePeerDescriptor. Both native entries have time0 and fail in prepareTests/fetchMavenCoordinatesBatched before test execution. Complete causes include java.net.ConnectException (Connection refused) from kotlin.directory for hierarchical-clocks0.0.4 and protocol0.0.402 POMs. The fetcher performed3 internal download attempts; these are separate from native test retries. Maven Central does not contain the coordinates. This explains the CI verdict, but why the endpoint refused the connection remains unproven; do not describe the server as fixed or add a test/code mitigation on that premise.
Checked main before any action: both tests passed FIRST attempt on base-main CI at15bc62a6c2489ebd3c6ae727597da7da9d5d903d, and both source blobs match latest main9635bf080f097a77b78c1c4d6415ab3729bbeaed. Its new full-suite run was still IN_PROGRESS when checked. ci-main-comparison.json records exact blobs/native results. No unrelated test was altered. GitHub Actions log archive returned an empty ZIP twice, so it supplied no timestamp context; the full native artifact is retained.
Final CI comment carries these counts and main comparison. The identical text was appended to the preserved PR body using REST, and complete readback verified exact OPEN/head/body. Required CI remains red; this handoff must stay open, rather than be completed merely because all scoped tests pass.
Non-required kotlin-build-ci-test suite107382071278 has zero dispatched runs and predates the PR update. It is outside the required gate, and no rerequest was issued. The previous head’s separate remote check failed before execution during BuildTest recovery; its prior full stack remains in the historical snapshot. No blind rerun, merge, queue, publication, deployment or production restart occurred.
Auxiliary Handoff connectivity: earlier discovery/bytecode failures were recorded, then fresh report uploads and readback succeeded. Read-only CN health/log checks found a separate Handoff Git-mirror PullRequestCursor conversion error; no evidence links it to the earlier transport failures. The central service is authoritative even when its Git mirror lags. Full details are in challenge-handoff-discovery.md. challenge-ci-artifact-fetch.md records this CI failure. The report-challenge CLI was not invoked because its documented automatic enqueue/merge conflicts with p115’s hard prohibition; both complete records are pushed on the evidence branch.
Relevant r115 PRs / refs
All refs below were checked with git ls-remote. No stash or unpushed source commit remains. Source checkouts are clean. Full native XML/attempt summaries, all stacks, source hashes, reviews, scripts and zipped logs are on the evidence ref under verification/r115. Build outputs and compiled wrapper classes are deliberately excluded.

Deployed or published but not merged
This task deployed/published nothing and restarted no server: its actions are local builds/tests, Git source/evidence pushes, PR metadata writes and Handoff metadata. Candidate source is unmerged on the PR/WIP refs above. No enqueue or merge command ran. The earlier owner's published/deployed-state disclosures remain in the historical snapshot below.
Next steps
- Re-verify https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlProtocol/pull/748 state/head and required checks. The PR is OPEN/unmerged at78321b19c. No source/test correction is justified by the current preparation failure alone. Do not merge, enqueue, publish or deploy under this brief.
- Inspect the newest main run, then correlate the artifact endpoint’s listener/proxy lifecycle with the failed fetches. The native artifact identifies the refused URLs and exact error, but not the listener’s cause. Reproduce the precise failure condition before changing the responsible service/library. Follow the upstream-fix workflow if a library defect is proved. Do not change unrelated tests, raise their limits, or blindly rerun CI.
- Once the source of the dependency-fetch problem is understood/addressed by its authorized owner, obtain a fresh required-CI result, use plain build-watchman0.0.21, and audit native first/final/retry/build-rule counts again. If main has advanced, fetch/rebase before any new build/source push and verify PR OPEN before updating it. Preserve all previous failure disclosures in the PR body.
- Complete this same handoff only after required CI is green on the actual PR head and nothing remains but review/merge. r115 is preserving the complete current evidence and removing workspace/r115 plus its own cache/classes/processes before exit; a fresh continuation must clone under workspace. All scripts/native records remain recoverable from wip/r115-evidence/verification/r115.
Reusable operational details
The native serial CLI wrapper uses the pinned0.0.124 public LocalBuildWorkspace/RetryingWorkspace APIs with testParallelism1, preserving native max attempts3, selectors, default test heap and isolation property from scripts/test.bash. It does not mock product dependencies or change test assertions/time budgets. run-tests.py guards global memory/disk each second and records exact source hashes. Positive records and final-local-summary.json prove the complete local gate; no extra full local repository-suite claim is made.
The same test method bytes must be used for red/green/mutation, including full wrapped child-cause text. Stream.close returns a CompletableFuture adapter that supplies CompletionException(IOException), while the root Netty future supplies IOException directly. Late writer reporting uses existing stderr path, observed through the same public capture pattern as testProtocolRootCloseLateFailureIsReportedNotAddedToResult. No reflection or private entry point is used.
Earlier owner's complete snapshot and refs — historical, preserved
The following older snapshot retains every prior source/control/evidence ref and failure disclosure. Its old pending statuses and source-head claims are historical; use fresh queries and the current sections above for decisions.
Handoff: Verify required CI and native first-attempt results for UrlProtocol forwarding completion
Written: 2026-10-21 15:01:55 UTC.
RE-VERIFY: This is a write-time snapshot. Query https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlProtocol/pull/748 for state/head/required checks and the two Actions runs below before acting. A fresh query wins. Current candidate is 5f6f2d3a25122e02a74cf4cc0148889f53335432. The r111 turn stopped within its150minute wall-clock limit. Re-verify the live claim; the continuation is released for pickup.
Design decisions in force — 2026-10-21
Original brief: “Contract: a forwarded response's completion callback runs exactly once, outside library locks, only after physical write completion OR output-channel termination.”
“Rules: no merge/enqueue/publish/deploy; no new timeouts/sleeps/iteration reductions; no edits to tests on main; no reflection/mocks. Never stop to ask the user.” New commits end with Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>.
The brief requires local scenarios one JVM at a time with a continuous memory guard below8.5GB, build-watchman0.0.21 plain --pr, never --to-merged, and native bld-all-tests first-attempt counts. Any PR-scoped first-attempt failure must be explained and repaired, not hidden by retry. Original r111 wall limit150minutes ends15:05 UTC; that bounded turn may end before the CI run. No user question is pending. The assignment ends at verified required checks and native attempt audit; it does not authorize merging.
Mission and remaining work
The user originally asked: “We need to investigate why https://my.externalbrain.wasmserver.com/ is failing to load and fix the underlying problem.” The ContainerNursery consumer handoff identified forwarding completion/outcome APIs needed in UrlProtocol. The current brief fixes review findings on https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlProtocol/pull/748 and rebases it onto main. Source repairs, negative controls, independent reviews, prescribed local checks, explicit-lease push and PR description/comment are done. Finish the required full-suite watch, extract native first/final/retry and PR-scope counts, explain any new failure, update the PR with those results, and clean owned resources. Do not merge or deploy.
What was found and done
- F1 proven: original product head 451dcaf0b35919568f199b947625d5a62f87f8ef restored interruption and threw out of
finished.await, then released the writer after stream.close merely scheduled child teardown. testForwardedPendingWriteCompletionOnWriterInterrupt uses a real TCP backend and real libp2p loopback hosts. Public pipeline gates retain the final actual ByteBuf/promise and actual child close independently. Interrupting the handler/writer produces3/3 failures at the direct completion predicate while both output terminal conditions are held. The correction closes output, keeps waiting despite repeated interrupts for the existing physical/lifecycle result, restores the flag, and then releases. Removing only that wait is rejected3/3 by the byte-identical test; the final method/test hashes prove the mutation is restored and excluded. It also checks repeated interrupt, exactly-once and late callback registration, cross-thread public re-entry and pending physical promise after teardown.
- F2 regression proven:
testForwardedPendingOutputObservesAttachmentDeadline holds an admitted header promise before backend body reading; it advances the existing public ManualClock attachment lifetime. Backend EOF proves watchdog cancellation. Original PR fails3/3 because output stays open; identical test bytes pass1/1 first attempt on main. Main proceeds to a backend read and observes cancellation; the PR's new physical wait parked before that read. A temporary one-shot cancellation observer now reaches pending output from watchdog or explicit response close, outside the attachment monitor, and is detached after settlement. No new deadline. The issue-only pre-existing hypothesis is refuted for this exact new wait; the older before-admission writability wait is unchanged. No speculative issue was filed.
- Explicit response-close control fails3/3 on original product before cancellation observation. Final selected tests also cover unread shared-backend discard: output completes before the backend tail is released, then the retained source drains and serves a sibling ping successfully.
- Independent review found asynchronous child-close failure: Netty catches an outbound close-handler throw and fails its promise while the child stays open. The new public rejection control fails3/3 before repair; the repair retires the root and passes first attempt. Another public test rejects both child and root close. A preliminary
unsafe.closeForcibly fallback changed transport state but left root.closeFuture pending; its control fails3/3 after callback delivery. Final code runs normal unsafe.close(root.newPromise()) directly in the failed root-close listener, preserving full lifecycle. Bytecode review confirms that listener is root-event-loop confined; the proposed extra off-loop scheduling concern was refuted. Late physical-close errors use the existing late-failure reporter because Netty publishes closeFuture before completing that promise. Final root lifecycle test passes first attempt with the physical write still pending.
- Rebased conflict-free onto main5a5e1f5a4, including https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlProtocol/pull/758's peer-registry test repair, https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlProtocol/pull/764's RPC encoding repair and https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlProtocol/pull/766's gossip test synchronization. This lane edits no test already on main. Rebase audit hashes preserve the original scoped files apart from upstream changes and the two intentional product corrections. Existing README completion contract already covers the repaired behavior.
- Final local gate: ten unique scenarios pass first attempt, zero retries, on the exact candidate: standalone root-lifecycle test1/1 plus native serial batch9/9. The batch includes the required writer-interrupt, host-stop, client-close and peer-registry cases, plus watchdog, explicit close, shared backend drain, ordinary final-write completion and failed child close. The public-API
SerialLocalCli.java wrapper sets testParallelism1 and forwards native maxAttempts3 through RetryingWorkspace. Test isolation, Java options, cache, native XML and selector bytes match scripts/test.bash. It avoids repeated preparation without reducing tests. Continuous local memory samples peak6,009,860,096 bytes, below8.5GB.
- PR push used an explicit lease against the original head. Comment and updated description retain all earlier starved-host failures and old first-attempt counts as historical evidence. No sample is replaced. Earlier full CI was2866/2867 first/final,18/18 build rules, sole peer-registry failure repaired by the main change above. Those old counts are not current-candidate counts.
Current CI and PR snapshot
PR is OPEN/unmerged at the candidate, autoMergeRequest null and mergeQueueEntry null (verified14:33 UTC). Required bld-build succeeded. Required bld-all-tests is IN_PROGRESS as of14:42 UTC; native counts and artifact are unavailable. The r111 tracked0.0.21 plain --pr watch was stopped for the bounded turn cleanup; establish a fresh owned watch on pickup. One GitHub connection timeout was reported loudly; later direct GitHub API reads succeed, and the watcher continues polling. Do not infer green from a live watcher.
An additional non-required remote check failed at14:07 UTC before upload: BuildTest rejected createUploadSessionStructured during RECOVERING_LOCAL_STATE, elapsed4123530ms. Zero sessions and chunks, zero tests. Full stack is in informational-remote-failure.md and raw check-run JSON. The neutral kompile remote status and this failure are outside the repository's two required checks. Say “required checks” when reporting their result; no all-statuses-green claim is justified. No unchanged rerun was requested.
Relevant PRs / refs
All heads below came from git ls-remote after pushes. All local code is committed, no stash remains; the unused secondary worktree is removed. Every source/control branch is preserved. The evidence branch contains native XML, every failed attempt/stack, zipped raw logs, thread dumps, bytecode evidence, reviews, scripts and original p111/p110 briefs. Build outputs, dependency caches and compiled wrapper classes are deliberately excluded.
Deployed or published but not merged
This lane deployed and published nothing: its executed actions were local builds/tests, Git source pushes, PR metadata writes and this handoff. No production deployment, server restart, Maven publication, enqueue or merge command ran. The candidate is unmerged source on the PR and WIP refs above.
Next steps
- Re-verify current state first.
gh pr view https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlProtocol/pull/748 --json state, headRefOid,mergeStateStatus, statusCheckRollup, mergedAt. Check the Actions runs and live handoff claim; if the head changed, inspect the change before reusing any old result. Keep PR check-status reads at least60seconds apart. Do not ask for approval or merge.
- Own a tracked watcher:
coursier launch buildwatchman:build-watchman:0.0.21 -r https://kotlin.directory -- --repo CodexCoder21Organization/UrlProtocol --pr 748 --check bld-build --check bld-all-tests. Plain --pr only. Follow true process exit and its RESULT, not a log-string loop. Do not requeue unchanged CI or infer a stuck executor from a legitimate queue.
- Retrieve verification helpers from the evidence branch and clone the candidate fresh under workspace/r111/UrlProtocol if code work is needed. Helpers expect out/r111 beside workspace/r111/UrlProtocol.
candidate-head.txt identifies this exact candidate; confirm it still matches. On terminal CI run python3 out/r111/collect-ci.py: exit75 means still pending; success downloads the native test-attempt-history zip/XML and writes full first/final/retry histories and all failed stacks. Then python3 out/r111/audit-ci-scope.py verifies every changed test has a native result and counts PR-scope first failures. Native first failures remain failures even if retry passes.
- If a scoped first attempt fails, read its whole stack and reproduce locally through the exact public path before changing code; use the testing architecture and philosophy. Existing invariants/reviews and exact controls are in the evidence branch. Preserve all attempts, no timeout/iteration changes or main-test edits. Check OPEN/head before any further explicit-lease push and honor the co-author footer.
- Update the PR description/comment with actual required-check conclusions and native first/final/build-rule/PR-scope counts plus failure explanations. Preserve historical disclosures.
gh2.23.0 pr edit fails on retired projectCards GraphQL; update-pr-rest.py checks the exact open head, PATCHes structured JSON and verifies full readback. Avoid blindly rerunning the description generator because its initial pending CI text is historical.
- Stop owned watchers/guards, preserve results remotely and remove owned clone/cache artifacts. Complete this handoff only when required CI and the native attempt audit are actually finished; leaving the PR OPEN is the explicit assignment boundary.
Operational notes and documents read
Original briefs, incremental findings, invariants, source equivalence receipts and independent review dispositions are preserved. Read README, Testing Architecture and Engineering Philosophy before code work. The final root repair review approved the exact public failure path after its earlier scheduling concern was refuted against pinned Netty bytecode.
The ordinary old multi-process queue intentionally stopped before starting its second scenario so the nine-check serial batch could take over; its missing-receipt controller stack is documented, with started=false metadata. No native test ran or failed at that handover. The first aborted baseline preparation likewise produced no native sample; all actual baseline results are separate and retained.
Handoff service health returned OK. Current create-handoff skill uses the central service with no clone/PR/merge queue. Canonical handoff README still contains an older automatic handoff-PR merge exception; current skill explicitly retires it, and the task forbids merges. Use service updates only. The report-challenge skill auto-merges its record, so tool/infrastructure challenge descriptions are retained in evidence under this task's no-merge rule.
