Finish the TinySite deploy-history follow-ups: redeploy the router, land and publish the UrlResolver startup-wait fix, bump the TinySite tools, and land the five small test PRs

The deploy-history feature is live and verified. Remaining: redeploy the ContainerNursery router from main (PR 685 merged 2026-10-22 03:45Z, not deployed); fix the P2 found in UrlResolver PR 1357 (abandoned startup-wait futures retained on the join owner), then re-review, green required run, first-attempt audit, merge; publish the resolver and bump TinySiteCli/TinySiteWui to it and redeploy the WUI; open and land the status-snapshot PR and the three approved UrlResolver test changes from their branches; continue the read-fault flake from its candidate mechanism; router P2 follow-up.

Handoff: Finish the TinySite deploy-history follow-ups

Written 2026-10-22 03:55 UTC; updated 05:00 UTC (relay-reservation lane finished unverified; PR 1357 run green and audited; review and read-fault lanes finished). Updated as the last in-flight lanes finish (see "In-flight work at hand-off time").

RE-VERIFY: everything below is a write-time snapshot. Re-check each PR with gh pr view <n> --repo CodexCoder21Organization/<repo> --json state, mergedAt,headRefOid,mergeStateStatus, statusCheckRollup, each branch with git ls-remote origin refs/heads/<branch>, and the live services with the ContainerNursery CLI (/home/u/bin/cs launch containernurserycli:container-nursery-cli:0.0.20 -r https://kotlin.directory -- --url https://api.nursery.wasmserver.com routes --json).

Design decisions in force

  • 2026-10-19, original request (verbatim): "Let's update management pages like https://tinysite.wasmserver.com/site/5d589398a4 to include a history of all deploys. Each deploy should show which files changed compared to the previous version, and have a URL where I can visit the site as of that previous version. I should be able to route the site's main/production link to a selected version (eg. rollback) if needed. Delegate the work to gpt 6.1-sol and maximize parallelization and race PRs."
  • 2026-10-20 (verbatim): "we do not want to stop progress on every question, parallelize the work/continue and keep open questions in the status report." Questions go in status reports; nothing blocks on them.
  • 2026-10-22 (verbatim): "You are now running as fable, use your best judgement regarding the open questions." Applied as: the three existing UrlResolver tests listed under "Decisions taken" may be changed as described there (wait inside the test; assertions and their wording unchanged; product untouched).
  • 2026-10-22 (verbatim): "Let's update the handoff, do not launch any more tasks, let these wind down naturally and then save their status to the handoff." No new delegate work was started after 03:21 UTC; the running lanes were allowed to finish.
  • Standing rules the owner has stated for this effort: never raise a timeout, lower an iteration count or weaken an assertion; never edit a test that exists on origin/main without approval (the three approvals above are the only ones); no mocks, reflection or sleep-based synchronization; every first-attempt CI failure is a real defect to trace, never a re-run; small, incremental, well-tested PRs (one landable change per PR, fail-first test first); production deploys follow merges; never commit route snapshots, environment maps or evidence files.

Mission summary

The requested feature is done and live: https://tinysite.wasmserver.com/site/5d589398a4 shows the deploy history (/site/<id>/deploys), each deploy lists the files changed against the previous one, each has its own URL to browse the site as of that deploy, and any deploy can be made the production target (rollback). The TinySite CLI has the same operations. Verified at write time: the page returns HTTP 200 with the "Deploy history" section and per-deploy links.

What remains is a set of follow-up fixes found while landing the feature, all independent of each other:

  1. ContainerNursery router redeploy. https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/ContainerNursery/pull/685 ("Finish accepted HTTPS responses before the router stops") merged at 2026-10-22 03:45:10 UTC as 760f3644 but is not deployed. See "Deployed but not merged / merged but not deployed".
  2. UrlResolver startup-wait fix https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/pull/1357: head a4fe1a62 (second mechanical rebase onto main 9f282dfc). Required bld-build run https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/actions/runs/39716370922 passed at ~04:40 UTC: 2,420 tests, every one success="true" on its first attempt, no <attempt-history> entries and no retry lines in the job log (audited by the supervisor from the test-attempt-records artifact). So CI and the first-attempt audit are clean for this head; the only remaining gate is the P2 below. Not merge-ready: the fresh review of a4fe1a62 (finished 04:23 UTC) found one P2 that must be fixed in the PR first. At src/foundation/url/resolver/UrlResolver.kt:33546–33567 the new startup-wait helper installs CompletableFuture.anyOf(ownerCompletion, expired) on the shared join-owner future; when the caller is interrupted, the code unschedules the expiry timer but never completes expired or the derived anyOf future, so every interrupted caller leaves a live AnyOf node attached to the owner future until the join finishes or close completes its generation. Reproduce by holding the initial join (the PR's own deadline/cleanup fixtures create this state), starting repeated sendRpcRequest callers with a finite connectionTimeoutMs, and interrupting each before releasing the owner: retained memory grows per caller. Fix: on caller exit, settle a private source future so the anyOf source-completion path unlinks the owner attachment (do not complete or cancel the owner; keep the primary/suppressed-failure and interrupt-flag behaviour). Add a fail-first test for repeated interrupted callers while the owner stays held (the existing testStartupJoinDeadlineTimerClearedAfterCallerInterruption only checks timer cancellation and the interrupt flag). The reviewer verified this against the pinned clocks-simple 0.0.16 class files and the installed JDK 21 CompletableFuture source; the helper is identical on both reviewed heads, so the rebase did not introduce it. Full write-up: lane findings REV1357g-findings.md (local only; the paragraph above is the complete content). After the fix: fresh review of the new head, green required run, and every first-attempt failure in the run's test-attempt-records artifact traced (the only accepted ones are those already traced to defects on main, listed under "Known flaky tests on UrlResolver main").
  3. After 2 lands: publish UrlResolver (next version after 0.0.1331, which is published; the version lives in build.kts), then bump the TinySite CLI (https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/TinySiteCli pins foundation.url:resolver:0.0.1321 in build.kts) and the TinySite WUI (pins 0.0.1329) to it, release the CLI, and redeploy the WUI. Publishing: build locally with -Xmx2g, not --remote (memory publish-maven-build-locally-not-remote), then the publishing CLI; CI never auto-publishes.
  4. Five small PRs in flight (status-snapshot fix; three approved test changes; one flake investigation) — see "In-flight work at hand-off time".
  5. Router follow-up (P2 from the final review of PR 685): in src/main/kotlin/org/example/facade/HttpsFacadeProvider.kt, the shutdown-caller marker is a thread-local set around the synchronous listener close() call. If a supplied listener socket's close() pumps a nested coroutine event loop (runBlocking { yield() }), an unrelated external shutdownGracefully(0) coroutine dispatched on that thread inherits the marker and is refused with the close-callback IllegalStateException. A real ServerSocket never does this, so it was judged a follow-up, not a merge gate. Options: make the marker coroutine-aware, or document in the README that a supplied socket must not run an event loop inside close(). Reproducer: the review's standalone probe is described in scratchpad/out/REV685i-findings.md (local only; not pushed — rebuild from the description: real HttpsFacadeProvider, injected ServerSocket whose close() runs runBlocking { yield() }, outer runBlocking { launch { shutdown() }; launch { shutdownGracefully(0) } }).

What was found and done (the chain)

  • 2026-10-19/20: feature delivered across TinySiteConventions (deploy-history format, bounded metadata reads), TinySiteCli (history + production selection), TinySiteWui (history pages, per-deploy serving, deploy API, browser publish/redeploy flow, immediate row rendering with per-cell "Changes"). All merged; see PR table.
  • Flakes and slow tests met on the way were root-caused and fixed in their own PRs (TinySiteWui 15/16/17/19/20/25, SimpleFileSystemServiceServer 40/41, FiledropEmbedded 26/27, FiledropServiceServer 37, ContainerNursery 690/694, okio 6). None were worked around.
  • 2026-10-22 ~03:23 UTC front-door outage during a router deploy/rollback: port-443 listener gaps of 40.3 s and 28.4 s, accepted responses cut. Root cause: the router stopped its only HTTPS listener before draining accepted requests. Fixed by https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/ContainerNursery/pull/685 (merged). The investigation notes are in scratchpad/out/INV4-findings.md (local only). A separate "persistent listener across router generations" change was explicitly not attempted (the PR README says so); it would remove the listener gap entirely and is a candidate future item.
  • UrlResolver: a lookup arriving during startup could report the wrong outcome and lose cleanup errors; fixed in PR 1357 (open). Three first-attempt failures seen on its CI runs were traced to defects already on main (see below) — not to the PR.
  • ContainerNursery ThreadMonitor status reads its map and counters under different locks, so a status call can describe two different moments; red tests exist on wip/fl8d-status-red (b0294b38), fix on fix/fl8d-thread-status-snapshot (538225e5, read lock + writer serialization, events emitted outside the lock). testJarHistoryBoundsDeployments fails its first attempt under load; 13 per-iteration cost items are inventoried in the lane's FL8d-cost-inventory.md (local) and on the wip/fl8c-bounds-* branches; each is meant to be its own small PR, limits (30 s, 200 iterations) unchanged. Some may build on open https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/ContainerNursery/pull/699.

Known flaky tests on UrlResolver main (traced, each with its own fix branch)

Test Mechanism (traced) Approved change Branch
testSendRpcRequestDoesNotRetryAfterPossiblyDeliveredRelayRequest (tests/…kts:118–120) asserts the second provider's relay reservation the moment join returns; README says join does not wait for the reservation, which completes on a worker wait for reservation completion inside the test, assertion unchanged fix/relay-reservation-assertion-ordering (not yet pushed at write time)
testBytecodeDiscoveryDeadlineExpiresDuringSharedFlight (…kts:107, "The worker must still be held when the caller returns. Expected <1>, actual <0>") test holds a worker 10 s while the caller's deadline is also 10 s; either timer fires first release the worker by a test-owned signal after the assertions, capped at the test's limit fix/bytecode-deadline-shared-flight-race (a31a583b)
testObservablePushInvalidationReplaysAfterProviderClose (…kts:153, "Expected <2>, actual <1>") line 152 re-sends an invalidation and 153 reads the count immediately; the README's observable transport delivers notifications on per-observable workers and does not promise delivery before the push reply (ObservableAwareServiceHandler.kt ~959/1008); neighbour tests wait on a latch wait for the second callback within the existing 10 s limit fix/observable-push-invalidation-replay-wait (not yet pushed at write time)
stressTestActiveQueryReportsResponseReadFailure (…kts:239/307, "Expected <2>, actual <1>") reproduced 10/10 with a controlled reproducer (lane finished 04:34 UTC): an opening timeout consumes the first target, then the last target receives the fixture's first truncated reply, so no second complete response is ever generated — the count assertion fires after a setup failure the fixture already reports. The fixture assumes two received requests although the public API walk guarantees attempts per target, not successful stream negotiation. Why the natural opening timeout expires in CI is still not isolated to a library line. Product code and the existing test are unchanged; no fix PR. Full write-up in the repository: https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/blob/2fa602fdd271a1591cecbeb8333d0ec1709787c3/investigations/FL9-findings.md; the lane also filed its own handoff for the decision: https://www.handoff.wasmserver.com/handoffs/hf-2026-10-22-decide-the-urlresolver-fixture-scope-then-finish-the-response-read-flake-fix open question for the owner: may the existing fixture be revised to establish its successful-stream-setup precondition deterministically (recommended: yes — it is the same class of change as the three approved ones, assertion unchanged), with the natural opening-timeout cause traced separately? fix/stresstestactivequeryreportsresponsereadfailure-flake (2fa602fd, controlled reproducer + diagnostics; do not merge as-is)

Decisions taken (and how to reverse them)

  • Questions 1–3 above resolved as "change the test to wait" under the owner's 2026-10-22 delegation. Reverse by closing the PR before merge.
  • PR 685 merged with the P2 above recorded as a follow-up (reachable only through a test-supplied socket).
  • The optional kotlin.build (remote) check is red fleet-wide (the buildtest service was "STARTING: recovering local state" for >95 min at write time) and is not a gate per the owner's 2026-10-20 direction (memory github-runner-required-remote-optional); only bld-build is required by the rulesets. The lost webhook for that check on PR 1357 was deliberately not re-requested.

Deployed but not merged / merged but not deployed

  • ContainerNursery router: merged 760f3644 (PR 685) is not running. As of 2026-10-21 the router on 198.199.106.165 ran as transient systemd unit containernursery-a79de48b-20261021T034721Z.service (Restart=no, KillMode=control-group, no cron watchdog) from bin/container-nursery-a79de48b-20261021T031633Z.jar (commit a79de48b). Before deploying: systemctl status the live unit, read /root/cn-watchdog.audit and append your own line, compare live commit vs main (gh api repos/CodexCoder21Organization/ContainerNursery/compare/<live>...main), build the fat jar from main, upload with the CN CLI, and replace the unit the way the audit log shows the last replacement was done. Expect a 28–40 s port-443 gap during the replacement (this is the gap PR 685 reduces for accepted responses; it does not remove the listener gap). Another Fable session has deployed on this host before (memory concurrent-fable-orchestrator-on-cn-host): check the audit log for a concurrent deploy first.
  • TinySite WUI: live jar /root/ContainerNursery-uploads/jars/tinysite-wui-d56e14dbcd30-20261021T142747Z.jar (route https:tinysite.wasmserver.com:443, danger_jarfile), built from TinySiteWui commit d56e14db, which is on main; main is 3 commits ahead (https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/TinySiteWui/pull/24 resolver 0.0.1329 bump, https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/TinySiteWui/pull/25 test cleanup). Redeploy the WUI after the resolver bump in step 3; use the upload-without---route, then update-route --image, then restart sequence (memory cn-upload-jar-route-overwrites-image).
  • Published artifacts: UrlResolver 0.0.1329, 0.0.1330 and 0.0.1331 are published on kotlin.directory (POMs return 200). Nothing was published by this session after 0.0.1328. TinySite CLI 0.0.2 was released via https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/TinySiteCli/pull/4.

Lane Task State at 03:55 UTC
Fresh review of PR 1357 head a4fe1a62 range-diff confirmation, interaction with main's PRs 1396/1406, first-attempt audit of run 39716370922 finished 04:23 UTC: rebase preservation confirmed; one P2 (abandoned startup-wait futures retained on the join owner — see item 2 under Mission summary); the exact-head CI records were not available before its cutoff, so the first-attempt audit of run 39716370922 is still to do
Status-snapshot fix open the small PR from fix/fl8d-thread-status-snapshot green runs in progress, diff review in progress
Relay-reservation test deterministic red (hold the registration worker at the existing gateRegistration test barrier), then the wait finished 04:57 UTC, unverified: the draft reproducer is pushed to fix/relay-reservation-assertion-ordering (head 7b014e62) but never ran — both local kompile builds exceeded the unchanged build deadline before any test body executed, and the remote builder could not provision (listDroplets … Network is unreachable). Original test and product untouched; no PR. Its findings and resume notes are committed on a separate evidence branch: https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/blob/533a1bb5f50e5949109d225ba34c50ab49bf25d0/investigations/fl11-relay-assertion-ordering-20261022/main-handoff.md (branch wip/fl11-relay-assertion-evidence-20261022, head 533a1bb5). Resume on a host with a warm kompile cache or a working remote builder: run the red, confirm it fails, then move the completion wait ahead of the unchanged assertion
Bytecode-deadline test red diagnostic then the test-owned release gate internal review passed; red run in progress
Observable-push test copied scenario, red run compiling
Read-fault flake find a reproducer or conclude the assertion is wrong finished 04:34 UTC: controlled reproducer fails 10/10 (see the flaky-test table); stopped at the fixture question; branch head 2fa602fd, nothing unpushed

Next steps

  1. Redeploy the ContainerNursery router from main (contains PR 685) following the playbook above; verify with a real HTTPS request through the front door and by checking that accepted responses complete across a stop.
  2. Fix the P2 in https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/pull/1357 (settle the abandoned bounded wait's private future on caller exit, fail-first test first), then drive it to merged: fresh review of the new head clean, required run green, first-attempt audit with every failure traced (accept only the three traced tests above). Enqueue with build-watchman … --to-merged; audit the attempt records before arming it.
  3. Publish UrlResolver (next version after 0.0.1331; bump build.kts via PR; probe the POM URL first for collisions), bump TinySiteCli and TinySiteWui to it, release the CLI, redeploy the WUI.
  4. Open and land the small PRs from the in-flight lanes: status snapshot; three approved test changes (each with a fail-first reproducer committed first); then one PR per Bounds-test cost reduction from the wip/fl8c-* inventory.
  5. Router P2 follow-up (coroutine-aware marker or README contract), and the "persistent listener across router generations" improvement if the owner wants the listener gap removed.
  6. Read-fault flake: answer the fixture question (recommended: revise the fixture to establish successful stream setup deterministically, assertion unchanged), land that as a small PR with the 10/10 reproducer as its fail-first test, and trace the natural opening-timeout cause as a separate item. The lane's own handoff for this decision: https://www.handoff.wasmserver.com/handoffs/hf-2026-10-22-decide-the-urlresolver-fixture-scope-then-finish-the-response-read-flake-fix.

Reusable / operational knowledge

  • kompile per-invocation cost: scripts/test.bash --local --test <file> compiles and resolves every test script, 65–235 s each under load (outliers 941/1018 s during disk/dependency recovery). After a mechanical rebase, check git range-diff and let the required CI run the suite; never re-run all PR files locally. Challenge filed: see PlanRepository challenges 2026-10-19 (kompile single-test selection).
  • CI artifact names: UrlResolver's bld-build.yml uploads test-attempt-records; ContainerNursery's uploads bld-test-results (test_log_file.xml, one <test … success="true|false"> per test; retries appear as <attempt-history> elements or "Retry" lines in the job log).
  • Delegate content filter: briefs mentioning thread-start failure / certain security-adjacent vocabulary get the lane killed ("flagged for possible cybersecurity risk"); relaunch with plain wording from the pushed branch.
  • Host: the /code box sits at 70–85 % CPU pressure from other tenants; elapsed time is never evidence; one test JVM per lane; GitHub API polling ≥3 min apart (shared quota).
  • Required vs optional checks: only bld-build is required by the rulesets; kotlin.build (remote) is informational and red fleet-wide while buildtest recovers. build-watchman 0.0.21 gates on required checks by default.
  • Merge queue: never re-request a check suite on a queue head (causes eviction); re-enqueue instead.

Status report: 2026-10-22 04:31:52 UTC

Original request: "Let's update management pages like https://tinysite.wasmserver.com/site/5d589398a4 to include a history of all deploys. Each deploy should show which files changed compared to the previous version, and have a URL where I can visit the site as of that previous version. I should be able to route the site's main/production link to a selected version (eg. rollback) if needed. Delegate the work to gpt 6.1-sol and maximize parallelization and race PRs." Later directions: keep open questions in the status report; use my own judgement on the open questions; and at 03:50 UTC: "Let's update the handoff, do not launch any more tasks, let these wind down naturally and then save their status to the handoff."

Status: RUNNING (winding down). Feature done and live. No launches since 03:21 UTC; five lanes still finishing on their own.

Progress since 04:12

  • The fresh review of https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/pull/1357 (head a4fe1a62) finished 04:23 UTC with one P2 in the PR's own new code: when a caller waiting on startup is interrupted, its expiry timer is cancelled but the anyOf future attached to the shared join-owner future is never settled, so each interrupted caller leaves a live node on the owner until the join finishes; retained memory grows per caller while the join is held. The PR is therefore not merge-ready; the mechanism, reproduction ordering and fix shape (settle a private source future on caller exit; fail-first test for repeated interrupted callers) are recorded in the handoff as next step 2. Required bld-build on that head is still running (70 min vs ~63 typical); the review's exact-head first-attempt audit could not complete before its cutoff and is listed as still to do.
  • Status-snapshot lane: red complete (3/3 failures per new scenario), fix and review complete, fixed validation in progress; it also pushed eleven wip/fl8d-prep-* branches holding the recovered per-cost drafts for the Bounds test (one per cost item), not yet PRs.
  • Bytecode-deadline lane: found its local artifact and started a sequential ten-sample red batch; no verdict yet. Relay-reservation lane: build still pending, zero test results. Observable-push lane: pushed a second checkpoint (9cba0df2); reproducer reviewed as clean, validation still blocked by native script build preparation.
  • Read-fault lane: pushed 2fa602fd; its audit of the original run https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/actions/runs/39704423232 confirms exactly two first-attempt failures there (the read-fault stress test and the observable-push test), both second-attempt passes.
  • Handoff body and summary updated at 04:26 with the P2; both uploads confirmed.

PRs this session Merged: 24 (table in the handoff). Latest: https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/ContainerNursery/pull/685, 2026-10-22 03:45:10 UTC (merged, not deployed, per wind-down). Pending: 1 — https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/pull/1357, OPEN, bld-build in progress, one P2 to fix before merge.

Delegated work at a glance

  • Not running (finished) - GPT 6.1-sol high - 61 min - 8 min since last update - Fresh review of PR 1357 at a4fe1a62; rebase preservation confirmed; one P2 (above); first-attempt audit of the exact head not obtained before cutoff. Nothing further expected.
  • Running - GPT 6.1-sol high - 1 h 52 min - under 1 min since last update - Read-fault flake; diagnostics pushed (2fa602fd); original-run audit done; reproducer still under 50%. Next: final findings.
  • Running - GPT 6.1-sol high - 1 h 35 min - under 1 min since last update - Status-snapshot fix; fixed validation in progress; eleven per-cost draft branches pushed. Next: the status PR.
  • Running - GPT 6.1-sol high - 1 h 14 min - under 1 min since last update - Relay-reservation test change; build pending, zero test results. Next: red record or findings-only exit.
  • Running - GPT 6.1-sol high - 1 h 16 min - under 1 min since last update - Bytecode-deadline test change; ten-sample red batch started. Next: red verdict.
  • Running - GPT 6.1-sol high - 1 h 16 min - under 1 min since last update - Observable-push test change; second checkpoint pushed; validation blocked by build preparation. Next: red result or findings-only exit.

How the fixes work: router stop (merged) drains accepted responses before the listener closes and refuses self-shutdown from its own callbacks; lookup startup (PR 1357) bounds the startup wait by the caller's own deadline and keeps the first failure reason, and now needs the abandoned-wait future settled on interrupt; status snapshot reads map and counters under one lock with events emitted outside it.

Blockers: none (yellow). Winding down by instruction. Plan changes: PR 1357 gains a required fix (the P2) before merge. Holds audit: nothing held; non-running items are handoff next steps. Landing parallelization sweep: PR 1357 CI running; its next review waits on the P2 fix, which is a handoff item; nothing else near landing. Owner direction captured: (none new). Next steps: let the five lanes exit, record final heads and states in the handoff, release the claim, cancel the loop, final report. Handoff: url://handoff/handoffs/hf-2026-10-22-finish-the-tinysite-deploy-history-follow-ups-redeploy-the-router-land-and-publish-the-urlresolver-startup-wait-fix-bump-the-tinysite-tools-and-land-the-five-small-test-prs

Lessons: (1) a delegate's age is a signal to read its log, not a fact to report; (2) after a mechanical rebase, range-diff and let the required check run; (3) a review that has twice passed a head is not done until its last pass reports: the P2 here surfaced in the third pass, from reading the JDK source of the primitive the new code leans on, so budget review time for primitives, not just for the diff.
