Handoff: Finish the ContainerNursery jar-history follow-up fixes and the request-identity protocol work
Written 2026-10-22 03:55 UTC; body refreshed 2026-10-22 04:52 UTC (PR 699 subagent finished; fix pushed to a wip branch). RE-VERIFY: everything below is a write-time snapshot. Before acting, re-check each pull request with gh pr view <URL> --json state, headRefOid,mergeStateStatus, statusCheckRollup, mergedAt, every branch head with git ls-remote, and take all pass/fail counts from runner XML (<attempt-history> elements in bld-test-results/test_log_file.xml), never from prose.
Design decisions in force
- Original request (2026-10-19, verbatim): "The ContainerNursery service should keep track of all recent jars deployed for each service, along with the date/time it was uploaded and the date/time that each of the jars was the jar actively serving the site and make it easy to roll to a different jar (eg. roll back a bad change), etc. Delegate your implementation to gpt 6.1-sol and parallelize efforts across sol delegates and race PRs." Follow-up: "This may involve updating the CLI/api too. Merge your changes, ensure test coverage is comprehensive."
- Every first-attempt test failure is a real defect (standing owner rule): a test that passes only on retry is root-caused and fixed, never re-run past. Audit every CI run with
grep -c '<attempt-history' on test_log_file.xml and attribute each retry by name.
- Never raise a timeout or limit, never lower an iteration count, never weaken, skip or delete an assertion; no mocks; no reflection. Editing an existing test needs the owner's approval (standing rules; the owner delegated the three approvals listed under "Decisions taken" on 2026-10-22).
- Request lifetime is decoupled from the connection (2026-10-21, owner, verbatim): "I'm worried about real failures that now might be handled as returning normally instead of reporting the problem. Also ... the behavior should likely be separated from the underlying connection, such that UrlResolver can do fancy things like transparently retry/reestablish the connection if the underlying connection fails." Supersedes any test or fix that treats "a dropped connection cancels the in-flight handler" as the contract. Tests must assert the exact handler outcome; never a bare completion latch in a
finally.
- Shutdown budget (2026-10-21, owner, "Option A"): keep the 5-second listener shutdown limit; no error-and-retain path.
- Wind-down (2026-10-22 03:4x UTC, owner, verbatim): "Let's update the handoff, do not launch any more tasks, let these wind down naturally and then save their status to the handoff." No new delegate lanes are started from that point; running lanes finish on their own and their final state is recorded here.
- A production deploy waits for the owner to ask for it.
Decisions taken on 2026-10-22 (owner delegated: "use your best judgement regarding the open questions")
- Fixture edits for https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/ContainerNursery/pull/691: approved, subject to the independent review's required changes. The review (findings copied in the evidence branch, see refs) found: the ten-main-fixtures patch keeps every assertion and numeric literal but its helpers must move inside each test function (top-level helper classes are not allowed in test scripts); the two-original-fixtures patch must have its second file regenerated against commit 13dd4009 (its last hunks assumed absent pre-edits), must keep unexpected gate failures on the caller-visible path, and should rename the two tests to say required own-store recovery. Not approved: a public "wait for startup recovery" API; recorded as a follow-up candidate only.
- Hoisting constant expected checksums in
testJarHistoryBoundsDeployments: approved only if measurement shows the checksum work is a significant share of the test's time (option C). Otherwise the product's upload cost is the fix.
- Protocol work so a request outlives its connection: started step 1 (a caller-minted call identity that survives a resend; wire-compatible). Steps 2 (service-side completed-reply retention and in-flight join) and 3 (UrlResolver resend) follow as separate small PRs.
Mission and where it stands
The feature is merged and live-capable: ContainerNursery records every jar deployed per route with upload time and the periods each jar was the active one, exposes that history through the admin API, and supports rollback to any retained jar by SHA-256; the command-line tool shows the history and restores a jar by SHA-256 (published as containernurserycli:container-nursery-cli:0.0.23 on https://kotlin.directory, POM verified 200 at write time). The product pull requests are listed under "Merged". What remains is landing the follow-up fixes that the merge gate's first-attempt audits surfaced, plus the protocol work the owner directed.

State at write time |
What must still happen |
| Idle HTTP listener shutdown without Netty quiet-period waits |
https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/ContainerNursery/pull/699 (head 7b3c034d, tests only); fix commit 54f94ccf pushed to https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/ContainerNursery/tree/wip/idle-http-listener-shutdown-fix-54f94ccf (not on the PR branch, because it is unvalidated) |
CI on 7b3c034d failed exactly on the three new tests, 3/3 attempts each, all other tests first-attempt green: that is the fail-first evidence (locally too: 3/3 failures of each failed-response test on source a2d6e172). The fix in 54f94ccf: (1) a response that fails after its headers releases its in-flight count when the next response on the connection starts, when the connection closes or its handlers are removed, and when the call ends with the response committed but unsent (Ktor exposes no public write-failure signal, so it uses the response's public sent flags); (2) the drain unwraps only CompletionException; (3) background shutdown failures reach every waiter and are logged, and a later shutdown() starts afresh; (4) from the start of shutdown() until the next start(), addMappingDynamic() records the mapping but opens no listener. Fixed-code evidence so far: open-connection test passed first attempt (5.8 s); the closed-connection and drain-time-listener tests failed only while the machine load average was 84–96 and the request took 7–18 s to reach routing, before any shutdown code ran (not counted either way); the subagent's 18-test re-run never started because load stayed above its threshold for an hour. The optional clock injection was not done. Draft PR body with the validation section empty: pr699-validation/body-next.md in the evidence branch; runner summaries alongside. |
Run the 3 new tests plus the 15 earlier shutdown tests one per invocation under the secondary compile lock, first attempt only (any first-attempt failure is a defect, including the slow-routing-under-load symptom, which must be explained, not waited out); rebase on main and push 54f94ccf to the PR branch with --force-with-lease; fill in the validation section and publish the body; fresh adversarial review of the final head; first-attempt CI audit; final review; enqueue. |
| Abandoned jar-history recovery off the constructor |
https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/ContainerNursery/pull/691 (PR head a62c699a, DIRTY); fixed candidate 13dd40094f6e on wip/history-callback-fix-histfix |
Candidate passed the 14-case fixed matrix 56/56 first attempts over 4 of 10 required runs; main comparison controls 7/8 (run 8 overlapped a machine-wide JVM pause 03:02:10–03:04:33 UTC and is tainted). Twelve existing-test setup patches prepared, reviewed, not applied. |
Finish runs 5–10; apply the corrected fixture patches per decision 1; re-prove the two changed PR tests 10/10 first attempt and the ten main tests 3/3; rebase; full local suite at the exact head; push to the PR branch; CI audit; adversarial + final review; enqueue. Resume brief with all of this: scratchpad/briefs/histfix-resume1.md (copied to the evidence branch). |
| 200-upload bounds test runs past its 30 s limit |
branch fix/upload-cycle-cost-bounds6 (remote c6385c75; local workspace has 5 newer unpushed commits up to 60447707) |
Earlier evidence: ~350 ms per cycle locally vs ~53 ms in CI; thread-stack captures in ThreadMonitor and per-cycle costs identified; product fixes drafted (observe cleanup workers without scanning all JVM threads, less optimizer work in guard JVMs). Full local suite running at write time. Related handoff: url://handoff/handoffs/hf-2026-10-22-establish-and-fix-the-first-attempt-timeout-in-testjarhistoryboundsdeployments (the earlier lane's reproducer attempt; its 1/4 baseline did not meet the 50 % bar). |
Read the suite XML; apply decision 2; open the PR leading with the why; 10/10 first-attempt proof of the unchanged test; CI audit; reviews; enqueue. |
Flaky testUrlFacadeActiveQueryReturnsEveryMatchingProvider (finds 1 of 2 providers) |
branches fix/active-query-first-attempt on ContainerNursery (23ffe056) and UrlResolver (270b4dd1); baseline branches fix/active-query-source-baseline on UrlProtocol and jvm-libp2p (local only at write time) |
On unchanged main the test passed first attempt 5/8 across three commits (45324dc2 0/1, 5bf7b35c 2/2, d8d1f4ef 3/5). The failing console shows a timeout opening the query stream to the facade, not an aggregation early exit. Lane tracing UrlProtocol2.queryServices. |
Reproducer ≥50 % per run, deterministic trigger, fix at the owning layer (expected upstream in UrlResolver/UrlProtocol: upstream test + fix, local build, publish, bump the ContainerNursery pin), 10/10 proof, PRs referencing each other, CI audits, reviews, enqueue. |
| RPC backend cancellation tests |
https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/ContainerNursery/pull/693 (head 70d6ef8d; bld-build CANCELLED) |
Paused by the 2026-10-21 direction: its tests assert cancel-on-disconnect. Evidence branches fix/rpc-backend-close-investigation (604c16c1) and findings in the evidence branch. |
Resume only after protocol steps 1–3 land; then rewrite the tests to assert the exact handler outcome under the new contract. |
| UrlProtocol request identity, step 1 |
branch fix/logical-rpc-call-identity on UrlProtocol (remote 58295285; local workspace has an edited docs/REQUEST_IDENTITY.md and six new tests/testLogicalCallIdentity*.kts, unpushed at write time) |
Lane started 03:21 UTC; design note and tests in progress. |
Push; fail-first proof; full UrlProtocol suite at the exact head; PR leading with the owner's direction and linking PR 693; CI audit; reviews; enqueue; then brief step 2 from the design note. |
| HTTPS idle-peer test warm-up |
https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/ContainerNursery/pull/677 (head 5a085988, bld-build SUCCESS, UNSTABLE only because the optional kotlin.build (remote) check failed) |
Parked on the one-full-suite-per-machine lock. |
Full local suite at the exact head, adversarial + final review, enqueue. |
| Possible main-side ordering defect |
none |
During main comparison run 8 (tainted by the JVM pause) testJarHistoryShutdownCompletesAcceptedUploadAndClosesEventStore failed with SQLException(database connection closed) in EventStore.recordRequest reached from ContainerNursery.forwardRequestWithAdmission (~line 4614) while a request was still being handled. Consoles in the evidence branch. |
Decide after main runs 9 and 10: if it recurs, it is a real request-completion vs event-store close ordering defect; reproduce and fix. |
| Production deploy |
live router JAR built from commit a79de48b (see memory of 2026-10-21: transient systemd unit, no cron watchdog) |
main is 12 commits ahead of the live commit with 5 product files changed (ContainerNursery.kt, ContainerNurseryServer.kt, JarDeploymentHistory.kt, HttpsFacadeProvider.kt, UrlFacadeProvider.kt). Verified with gh api repos/CodexCoder21Organization/ContainerNursery/compare/a79de48b...main. |
Redeploy from main when the owner asks; check how the live PID is supervised first and read /root/cn-watchdog.audit on the host. |
What was found and done (the chain)
- Feature delivered through raced delegate PRs: history recording and rollback by SHA-256 (https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/ContainerNursery/pull/668), configurable retained jar contents (https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/ContainerNursery/pull/663), retention pruning and cleanup fixes (671, 673, 674, 679, 680), management/HTTPS status fixes (670, 676, 681), CLI history/restore commands (https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/ContainerNurseryCli/pull/45) and the CLI's GitHub-runner CI gate (https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/ContainerNurseryCli/pull/46); CLI 0.0.23 published.
- Merge gate findings became fixes. Each first-attempt CI failure was treated as a defect: cold type-metadata loading in uploads and first responses (664, 667), stdout fixture handling (665, 669), log-history scans during snapshots (675), UrlProtocol TCP listener stop (678, pins 683/688), bld-build retry history kept in results (682), JVM randomness setup scanning the temp directory (689, 696), cleanup/start ordering waits (690, 692), temporary history I/O outside the registry lock (695), unadopted fixture child (697), HTTPS connections without a response (700), joining every history worker at shutdown (694), Cloud Run predeployment wait (698), repeated-send-failure probe joins (701).
- Listener shutdown (699): HTTP listeners count a request as in progress from decode on the Netty worker until the final response is written, the connection closes, or the response fails; shutdown closes acceptance first, then gives in-flight responses one shared 5 s budget across all listeners and stops engines with a zero quiet period (idle shutdown ≈0.2 s). The adversarial review of a2d6e172 found the failed-response leak (Ktor's
respondWithFailure writes no LastHttpContent, so openResponseCall was never cleared and every later shutdown waited the full 5 s; production reaches it via respondBytesWriter { upstream.copyTo(this) } in DockerBackedContainer.kt:140, DangerJarFileBackedContainer.kt:564, CloudRunBackedContainer.kt:252). Fix drafted as 54f94ccf (local, see table).
- Recovery off construction (691): the constructor's synchronous scan of java.io.tmpdir for abandoned
jar-history-* stores (global lock, ~160–190 ms, observed stuck in UnixFileSystem.list0 at a 30 s limit) moved to the writer thread; shutdown cancels the optional scan, preserves unrecovered records, and still joins the own-store work within shutdownTimeoutMs. A reentrant-shutdown defect (recovery callback thread left interrupted; 3/3 failures at baseline) is fixed in candidate 13dd4009. Twelve existing tests encode the old ordering; patches prepared and reviewed (decision 1).
- Infrastructure incidents recorded as challenge reports: kotlin.directory refusing connections and buildtest in RECOVERING_LOCAL_STATE (https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/PlanRepository/blob/main/challenges/2026-10-22-0155-kotlin-directory-refused-connections-and-buildtest-was.md); the shared 309 GB overlay at 99–100 % (https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/PlanRepository/blob/main/challenges/2026-10-22-0253-the-code-box-s-shared-309-gb-overlay-sits-at-99-100-full.md). During the disk emergency all session JVMs were paused 03:02:10–03:04:33 UTC; any timing failure in that window is treated as invalid and re-run.
- Duplicate lane: a delegate recorded as retired on 2026-10-21 12:46 had in fact resumed and ran 14 hours as a second owner of PR 691 next to its replacement; killed 2026-10-22 03:14. Lesson recorded: verify liveness by which log each process holds open.

Related handoffs
- url://handoff/handoffs/hf-2026-10-22-establish-and-fix-the-first-attempt-timeout-in-testjarhistoryboundsdeployments — the bounds-test reproducer attempt; this handoff depends on it.
- url://handoff/handoffs/hf-2026-10-19-finish-verification-of-jar-history-server-review-fixes — completed 2026-10-22: its PR (668) merged 2026-10-20 15:59Z; the two bounds watchdog failures it left open are carried by the bounds item above.
Next steps (in order of readiness)
- Collect each running lane's final findings (files
scratchpad/out/{histfix,bounds6,urlquery,proto1}-findings.md, mirrored to the evidence branch) and push any unpushed commits listed above.
- Land https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/ContainerNursery/pull/699: push 54f94ccf, fresh adversarial review, first-attempt CI audit, final review, enqueue (GraphQL
enqueuePullRequest; gh pr merge --auto is rejected in this repo).
- Resume the PR 691 lane with
scratchpad/briefs/histfix-resume1.md once its matrix completes; land it.
- Open and land the bounds6 PR under decision 2; land the URL query fix upstream and bump the pin.
- Land UrlProtocol step 1; brief steps 2 and 3 from
docs/REQUEST_IDENTITY.md; then resume PR 693.
- Land https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/ContainerNursery/pull/677 after its full suite and reviews.
- Ask the owner for the production redeploy from main.
Reusable / operational knowledge
- Merge gate used here: green required
bld-build, first-attempt XML audit (grep -c '<attempt-history', attribute every retry), a clean independent adversarial review of the final head, own final review, then enqueue via build-watchman --to-merged or the GraphQL mutation. Find a head's run with gh api repos/<r>/commits/<sha>/check-runs --jq '.check_runs[]|select(.name=="bld-build")|.details_url' (gh run list --commit is not supported). kotlin.build (remote) is optional per the 2026-10-20 ruleset check; bld-build is the required gate.
- Machine locks:
/tmp/claude-1000/cn-compile.lock and cn-compile-b.lock for builds; only one full scripts/test.bash machine-wide.
- Disk on the /code box: at <800 MB free pause session JVMs (SIGSTOP), resume at ≥1.8 GB, treat timing failures in the window as invalid; confirm nothing holds a file open before deleting it.
- A delegate resume reported as failed may have started: list
codex exec processes by the log they hold open (readlink /proc/<pid>/fd/1) before relaunching, and kill retired session groups.
