Superseding current fixture checkpoint — 2026-10-22T02:43:24.970333+00:00
Latest source head is e4893be0d0cbe0ee5e65c733a2571d231e01113d, pushed and ls-remote verified at https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/tree/wip/r2-rebased-9f282df . Commit: https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/commit/e4893be0d0cbe0ee5e65c733a2571d231e01113d . It adds a test-owned worker ThreadFactory and physical joins before the UNCHANGED global thread-baseline assertion, and the same join in finally. The 10,000 operations, sixteen workers, five fault phases, every production/resource assertion and 120-second timeout are unchanged. This corrected a demonstrated TEST FIXTURE ownership error, not a claimed second main defect.
New-head 394a2fa work test passed 5/5; its first resource run failed attempt one at 30,592 ms (“Joined shutdown retained a thread created during the churn”), then passed automatic attempt two at 28,490 ms. The batch stopped rather than counting it clean. A diagnostic copy passed once without a survivor, so the original first failing thread identity was NOT captured. Do not claim proven causality to the new main routing change or a proven production leak.
Narrowed discovery repeated only the test-owned executor shutdown at drained-wave boundaries, retaining all 625×16 real public RPC operations. It failed native attempts 1/2/3 at 6,611 / 11,949 / 5,060 ms, at waves 65/117/46, while executor.isTerminated=true and its own worker was still alive inside ThreadPoolExecutor.processWorkerExit/tryTerminate. A controlled public ThreadFactory then held its Thread after Runnable.run returned: executor termination was true and physical thread alive; Thread.join made the unchanged raw Thread.isAlive condition pass. That deterministic contract experiment passed attempt one (1,244 ms), independently of hardware. Official contracts: https://docs.oracle.com/en/java/javase/21/docs/api/java.base/java/util/concurrent/ExecutorService.html and https://docs.oracle.com/en/java/javase/21/docs/api/java.base/java/lang/Thread.html .
The SAME narrowed public-path discovery probe, with physical joins added before its unchanged live-thread check, then PASSED attempt one in 53,894 ms, no history, through all 625 waves. Earlier corrected-probe launch did not execute any test (0 ms) because kotlin.directory refused connections resolving kompile:build-kotlin-jvm:0.0.33 and annotations 0.0.10; the actual endpoint later returned HTTP 200 and a valid Maven project POM before the successful retry. No service restart, deployment, publishing, timeout increase or blind CI rerun was used.
The original committed resource test now records Threads using a delegating Executors.defaultThreadFactory and physically joins only those owned Threads after awaitTermination, preserving the existing module-wide reader/pool/FD/resource checks. Source assertions did not become eventual polling. Temporary diagnostic scripts were moved OUT of the repository to out/R2-diagnostics rather than delivered as permanent tests; exact diffs below preserve them for cold pickup.
Current latest-head e4893be first-attempt target counts: {"resources": 5, "work": 3, "refusals": 0}. Active repeat helper is R2-joined-runs.py (tracked session 37275), resources first, then work, then refusals. Manifest R2-joined-manifest.json contains only attempt-one clean records; ready flag is R2-rebased-ready.json, written only after all fifteen. Full runner from session 62057 remains queued and cannot start without that flag and an unchanged, clean head. It has not run a new-head full suite. The original PR remains at OLD verified 776b0d4, not e4893be; old-head Actions may finish independently. Do not force-push the PR until the new-head full gate required by the brief has actually completed.
All old five-pass and full-suite records below refer to 776b0d4 unless explicitly labeled otherwise. Latest-head acceptance is NOT complete. Two existing full-suite first-attempt failures still await the owner's file-scope decision; no excluded file edited. Mutation controls for the captured-removal and typed-classifier assertions are preserved below; the latter was run before the worker-join fixture correction, whose only changes occur at thread creation/final teardown. If the owner requires an exact final-file control rerun, repeat that typed mutation on e4893be before the final five-pass gate rather than asserting it already ran on this exact file version.

Mission and design decisions in force
The owner asked: "Do we have comprehensive e2e tests? Including scale tests as per https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/DocumentationRepository/blob/main/architecture/TESTING.md#extreme-condition-testing-load-fuzzing-failure-injection-and-chaos" and then "If there are gaps, have sol write the missing tests."
R2 owns audit gaps 2, 3, 4 in UrlResolver: concurrent candidate removal/recovery, actual candidate-backed cleanup work counts, and bounded retained resources under combined churn. The deployed peer-registry fixes are context, not a request to deploy this branch. This lane added three public-path tests, found and fixed an obsolete candidate confirmation bug, and consumed the already-merged keyed snapshot fix through protocol 0.0.1430.
Binding owner direction from the 2026-10-21 brief:
- "Do not touch files outside your scope." This is why ownership direction is pending for two EXISTING tests that failed first attempt during the full suite. They are not the three new R2 tests, and none of their files was edited.
- "You are not allowed to merge, enqueue, mark ready, close PRs, publish artifacts, deploy, restart services, rerun CI, or delete/rerequest buildtest runs."
- "Never increase a timeout, never reduce an iteration count, never disable/skip/delete a test, never weaken an assertion, never use mocks (no mockito) or reflection, never make a private member public for a test."
- Local builds/tests only, default fork heap 128 MB; new tests must have mutation/fail-first proof and five final-head attempt-one passes. Full suite once on final head under
flock /tmp/claude-501/complete-suite.lock scripts/test.bash --local --test . --log full.xml.
- "Your goal is to add end-to-end integration tests which identify bugs (the tests should initially fail), and then fix the bug in the implementation." If a new test exposes a real defect, freeze its failing test in a pushed test-only commit before fixing the implementation at its source. Never work around an upstream bug in a consumer.
- Required GitHub Actions green; informational kotlin.build remote status does not block. Check no more than once per two minutes; stop watching after 90 minutes. The original CI watch began around 01:32 UTC on 2026-10-22, so its hard deadline is approximately 03:02 UTC, not 90 minutes after a pickup.

Superseding rebase checkpoint — 2026-10-22T02:04:26.076509+00:00
Main advanced after the old-head verification and PR creation. It now includes release 0.0.1331 and retirement-recovery route changes: https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/commit/9f282df (see full SHA from a fresh fetch). The brief explicitly says to rebase if main moves. Clean rebase produced 394a2fa0f956ea9365ef7942a89a79ab6fbff443. This is now the local feature head, checkpointed remotely on wip/r2-rebased-9f282df. The existing PR branch deliberately remains at old verified 776b0d45cca07b7f1038c6d9478232744989a89f until the new-head full-suite gate finishes. DO NOT say the old full suite verified this new head.
New source is already durable at https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/tree/wip/r2-rebased-9f282df . Its rebased source fix is https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/commit/a0e60a0b277196bcb1037380ca5f265189aaec92 and test-only ancestor is https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/commit/c13e291b8f98f846f1da5515c0b7c8235616d88f . Original source/fail-first links below remain valid on the current PR branch; no tests were changed during rebase.
Fresh five-run-per-family verification is active: tracked session 46675, timeout PID 81918 / process group 81918; log R2-rebased-runs.log, manifest R2-rebased-manifest.json, final ready flag R2-rebased-ready.json. It stops on any first-attempt failure/history or a further main change. Native first results are pending at this checkpoint. Full-suite runner is queued under the shared lock: tracked session 62057, timeout PID/process group 93546, flock 93547. At 02:02 UTC lock owner 25441 had two other waiters (47473, 86040) ahead of R2. The runner refuses to start without all fifteen new-head clean records, re-fetches/rebases after admission, checks exact head, and runs the full suite once to R2-rebased-full.xml. It has a 5,400-second overall deadline from ~02:01 UTC. A queued command whose precondition fails exits without a test run; that is not a suite result.
Before any PR-head update, finish the new-head target gate and full suite, check the PR is still OPEN, then push with a lease against old remote 776b0d45cca07b7f1038c6d9478232744989a89f after a final fetch/rebase. Update body with both old and new evidence, not just the old counts. No code outside R2 scope was edited. The existing PR watch remains on old 776b0d4 (pending at ~28 min vs ~66 min typical at 02:00); it may finish independently but does not establish new-head acceptance. Its original 03:02 UTC watch limit has not been reset.

Open/non-draft at verification. Three new tests; three-line obsolete-candidate guard; protocol pin 0.0.1430. All scoped tests 5/5 attempt one, plus full-suite attempt-one successes. Two OTHER existing tests failed attempt one, then passed attempt two. |
Fresh PR metadata: {"headRefOid": "776b0d45cca07b7f1038c6d9478232744989a89f", "mergeStateStatus": "BEHIND", "mergedAt": null, "state": "OPEN", "url": "https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/pull/1414"}. Source tree clean, no stash, one worktree. The shallow checkout originally tracked origin/main only; its local remote-tracking feature ref has now been populated from the verified ls-remote SHA. No local-only commits remain after that tracking correction. Reference clones r1-R2-protocol (main 0ed6401...) and r1-R2-evidence (main c7dce77...) are clean and contain no changes or partial work. No subagents.
Nothing from this effort was deployed or published: only Git pushes, PR creation/readback, Maven downloads and local test/build commands were run. Existing upstream protocol snapshot fix is merged at https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlProtocol/pull/750 (commit https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlProtocol/commit/15bc62a6c2489ebd3c6ae727597da7da9d5d903d); published 0.0.1430 is consumed, not produced by this lane.
What was proved
tests/testCandidatePruneStormHasBoundedWork.kts, matching function: N=32/256/1000, sixteen prune callers. The first sixteen real network dials are gated; one caller finishes before the other fifteen resume old snapshots. Main failed attempt 1 at N=32 because a removed peer received another confirmation; automatic attempts 2 and 3 failed too (886/918/907 ms). Test-only fail-first ancestor https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/commit/7963d58003f2e726dacb67d7831c447935790b4c is byte-for-byte identical to the final test. The mechanism is age-prune snapshots at UrlResolver.kt:12401/12422 reacquiring a retired lifetime after a different owner removed it and released the claim; the shared confirmation path did not recheck membership before dialing. Fix https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/commit/f5ac9fe124f9871f7447df7b0ae1ab8aca281260 checks current descriptor/lifetime before confirmation, preserving existing finally release. The same unchanged test then failed old protocol 0.0.1429 at N=256: 32,376 publication copies > 16,384. Protocol main already fixed its array-copy snapshots in the upstream PR above; pinning published 0.0.1430 in 776b0d45cca07b7f1038c6d9478232744989a89f passes without changing bounds.
tests/testConcurrentPruneRefusalsPreserveRecoveredPeers.kts, matching function: 1,000 identities, 16 callers, 64 rounds, 64,000 recoveries, 16,000 same-ID replacements, duplicate stale removers, equal-time contact-only and accepted-route evidence, exact callbacks/services and later clean removal. Mutation replaces captured-evidence removal with prior lifetime-only removal. Native attempts 1/2/3 FAIL (1,268/1,274/1,189 ms), 500 peers incorrectly removed in round zero; restored source passes. No new main defect established by this test. Initial route-count fixture correction was NOT a main bug: 750 peers retain two routes, so exactly 1,750 final route attempts correspond to exactly 1,000 confirmation warnings.
tests/testPruneAndRetryChurnReleasesOwnedResources.kts, matching function: 10,000 operations, 16 real provider nodes, 625 ordered waves; 2,000 each normal RPCs, typed zero-admission declines, accepted-prefix failures, cancellation after provider entry, and refused prune/replacement operations. Real buffers shrunk to 128 bytes and forced full (16×128 bytes); zero streams/bytes/handlers after drained waves, exact client stream close ownership, fixed subscriptions/index size, joined thread/FD baseline. Mutation removes typed RpcFrameNotAdmittedException classification while retaining the legacy exact diagnostic; final ordered test fails all three native attempts (1,202/1,178/1,184 ms), restored passes. Test coordinator initially released provider replies immediately after Future.cancel, allowing a valid reply to win interruption observation. Fixed only that invalid ordering in https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/commit/7e055ebc5247269d97e2f4da09311c48750b538b by waiting for every caller to finish before releasing providers; assertions/timeouts/10,000 operations unchanged. The typed mutation was repeated on the exact ordered test. No new main defect established by this test.
All three tests passed five times on the OLD verified head 776b0d45cca07b7f1038c6d9478232744989a89f, attempt one, no attempt-history:
- Work ms: 1434 / 1784 / 1389 / 1384 / 1349.
- Recovery ms: 31131 / 35424 / 32413 / 32622 / 37234.
- Resources ms: 39919 / 54014 / 52760 / 34056 / 30303.
The audit's same-round refusal detail is already covered by existing tests/testPruneRefusalDoesNotRetryFastPathInSameRound.kts. It makes three real failed gossip sends while an age verifier owns the lifetime, records same-descriptor contact, asserts one warning across age and fast paths, and a second warning/removal only in the next maintenance call. This subpremise of a missing assertion is refuted by that existing test; no redundant new scenario added. It passed attempt one in the full suite (2,049 ms).
Full suite and unresolved first-attempt failures
The ONE full local suite ran under the shared lock, 00:41:13–01:29 UTC on the exact verified head. Native counts: 2,387 first-attempt passes, TWO first-attempt failures, zero final failures, 2,389 eventual successes. The two failures passed automatic attempt two; they are NOT counted as attempt-one passes. The three new tests passed attempt one in the full suite: work 1,252 ms; recovery 31,264 ms; resources 57,654 ms.
The user was asked asynchronously: "The R2 full suite passed 2,387 tests on attempt one; two existing tests needed attempt two: testCancelledDiscoveryRecoveryPublicationIgnoresRelay and testFailedObservableRequestReconcilesRetainedParameters. All three new R2 tests passed attempt one. The brief says ‘Do not touch files outside your scope.’ Which lane should handle these two existing cancellation/close test failures?" Options: keep R2 scoped and assign another lane, or expand R2 to investigate/fix both. No reply as of this snapshot. Do not assume a default option was approval.
OBSERVED: The observable fixture waits on a server-side onClose latch, then sends from its client PersistentRpcConnection without joining its public awaitCurrentTransportClosed future. Its failure is StreamClosedBeforeWriteException on the old stream. INFER: server closure can beat client-reader cleanup. This is NOT a verified root cause without a controlled reproducer; no fix guessed. The retry classifier intentionally accepts only full-frame RpcFrameNotAdmittedException or the exact old diagnostic, not arbitrary close errors.
OBSERVED: The cancellation bridge cancels its inner stream future and THEN counts down cancellationObserved (UrlResolver.kt:5647–5651); the test next asserts outer Future.cancel(true). INFER: outer completion can beat that second cancellation, but the native failure does not show whether outer completion was successful or exceptional. Do not claim it is definitely only a fixture bug or a known preexisting/non-regression. Both need controlled reproduction if scope is assigned.

Plain build-watchman 0.0.21 gates only required bld-build. Non-required kotlin-build-ci-test suite 107584852768 is queued with zero dispatched runs. No rerequest is allowed; informational remote state must not block acceptance.
A brief 01:40 GitHub API 403 was hourly shared quota exhaustion. /rate_limit at 01:42:19 reported a fresh window (used 17, remaining 4983, reset 02:41:57), and the monitor recovered at 01:44. Do not blame a particular worker without evidence. report-challenge CLI would auto-enqueue/merge, forbidden here; friction is recorded in this body/findings instead.
Active local watch is tracked tool session 28983, wrapper PID 69376 / timeout 69378 (re-verify; PIDs are a snapshot), command timeout 5400 jars/coursier launch buildwatchman:build-watchman:0.0.21 -r https://kotlin.directory -- --repo CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver --pr 1414 --check bld-build --interval-seconds 240. Do not start a second watcher while its claim/process is active. Its wall deadline remains ~03:02 UTC. Before ending the session kill every background process started and confirm with ps -eo pid, args -ww; never self-match pgrep/pkill patterns. Do not cancel GitHub runs.
- Reverify PR state/head and current checks first, honoring at least two minutes between assessment cycles. Never merge/enqueue/mark ready/close.
- Continue the existing watcher to required Actions green, terminal failure, or the original 90-minute limit. Once green, download native
test-attempt-records with gh run download 39706215284 --repo CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver --name test-attempt-records --dir <out> and read XML attempt histories. Do not treat eventual successes as first-attempt passes.
- Obtain file-scope/ownership direction for the two existing local failures. If expanded, reproduce their exact mechanisms consistently before any implementation change; no guessed fix, weaker assertion, timeout increase, retries or hardware change. Fix upstream if the reproducer points upstream. If assigned elsewhere, record that ruling and leave R2 files scoped.
- Update PR body using
gh api --method PATCH repos/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/pulls/1414 --input body.json (jq rawfile), not gh pr edit, and read back. Include native first-attempt counts and informational remote state, end with the required Claude Code footer.
- Final lane report must include per gap: file/function, scale, fail-first/mutation attempts, whether it found a main defect and exact fix URL, 5/5 attempt-one evidence, full-suite counts, PR URL and CI state. Complete/archive this handoff only after the remaining work is actually resolved; release claim on a stop.
Reusable mechanics and local material
Fresh resolver clone: /tmp/claude-501/-code/2abf611d-5e04-4919-84a8-d7b72869d40c/scratchpad/workspace/r1-R2 . Findings: /tmp/claude-501/-code/2abf611d-5e04-4919-84a8-d7b72869d40c/scratchpad/out/r1-R2.md . These paths may vanish; code is remote and essential findings/native stacks are embedded here. No raw jar/cache or giant XML is pushed: the brief forbids committing build/test artifacts, so those local files are deliberately omitted; exact verdicts and all needed failure details are preserved in this service body and PR. The full chronology follows as a historical appendix, with older blocker/status notes superseded by later dated entries.
Local tests: git fetch origin main && git rebase origin/main before building; scripts/test.bash --local --test tests/<scenario>.kts --log <outside-repo.xml>. Prefer FILE selector (function-only selection incurs repository-wide diagnostic scanning). The runner retries failures up to three times; parse <attempt-history> and count only attempt 1. No remote build/test clients. rg is absent; use grep/find. gh is old: gh run list has no --event flag, while gh run download supports --name/--dir; PR body update uses the API, not gh pr edit.

Plan:
- [in progress] Read both audits, required testing/philosophy documents, repository README and relevant public APIs.
- [pending] Design invariant table and implement gap 2 concurrent removal/reconnection test with mutation control.
- [pending] Implement gap 3 candidate-backed work-count test with mutation control.
- [pending] Implement gap 4 combined resource-churn test with mutation control.
- [pending] Run each final test 5 times, review tests/code, rebase and run full suite under shared lock.
- [pending] Open non-draft PR, verify required Actions checks, clean up tracked processes.
OBSERVED: Read final-audit-B.md fully. The audit distinguishes existing deterministic one-peer races and separate registry work bounds from the missing combined workloads. No independent test runs have occurred yet. User requires local builds/tests, default 128 MB fork heap, mutation evidence, five first-attempt passes, no merging/publishing/deploying.
OBSERVED (2026-10-21 22:54 UTC): Read audit-B.md fully and required TESTING.md (including machine-independent triggers, one scenario per file, and extreme conditions) plus PHILOSOPHY.md. Read resolver README overview/build and relevant cleanup/transport contracts. Documentation says remote status must never be red, whereas this brief explicitly makes it informational; the brief controls this lane. Repository search found CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver. Full-history clone was still transferring after about 3 minutes; stopped that tracked clone and started a fresh depth-1 clone with a 180-second deadline. No code/tests written yet.
OBSERVED (2026-10-21 23:00 UTC): Fresh shallow clone complete; no root AGENTS.md. Read relevant README contracts and source for pruneOfflinePeers, candidate removal, injected-provider confirmation, persistent opens, and existing keepalive/cancellation/referral/typed-retry tests. Public diagnostics include registry eviction/index work and fabric stream/handler counts. INFER: overlapping prune calls capture stale arrays; after the first owner removes a peer, another call may claim the now-retired lifetime and confirm it again because neither age loop nor isPeerReachableForPrune rechecks current membership before dialing. Next experiment forces all 16 callers to capture before a leader removes the unheld peers, then releases the other 15.
Invariant table (before test code):
| Resource | Creator / owner / close | Terminal state / caller observations | Re-entry / close / restart |
|---|---|---|---|
| Removal candidate | Public registry capture; prune owns confirmation claim | Retired lifetime cannot start new confirmation; fresh success/routes refuse removal | Concurrent prune skips an owned lifetime; later rounds reacquire refused claims; candidates are session-local |
| Membership/service/replay state | Registry/resolver; lifetime removal clears owned records | Fresh lifetime and services survive stale results; one callback per actual removal | Replacement gets independent token; callbacks may re-enter public APIs |
| RPC transport | Public persistent open; connection owns every generation | Retired generation closes once after accepted work drains | Zero admission retries; accepted ordinary request never replays; cancellation releases ownership; close is terminal |
| In-memory network | Test starts isolated providers/fabric; node/fabric close own resources | Drained waves return streams, buffered bytes, handlers and subscriptions to bounded baseline | Fault controls act at the NetworkProvider/RpcStream dependency boundary; joined shutdown must settle resources |
OBSERVED (2026-10-21 23:05 UTC): Added first gap-3 experiment (32/256/1000 peers, 16 overlapping public prune callers): gates the first confirmation of each caller at NetworkProvider.dial, lets one leader finish, then releases stale snapshots and asserts no retired peer receives another dial. Test runner is compiling the resolver; no XML verdict yet. Added gap-2 scenario source: 1000 identities, 16 prune callers, 64 ordered rounds of post-failure route/contact refresh, quarter-population same-ID replacements, duplicate stale removers, and a final cleanup round. These tests use only public node/registry/network APIs. Nothing has been claimed passing or committed as a fail-first proof yet.
OBSERVED (2026-10-21 23:04 UTC; earlier approximate 23:05/23:00 labels were notes, not clock readings): Gap 3 reproduces a real defect on main. R2-work-baseline2.xml records first-attempt FAIL (886 ms), with default runner attempts 2/3 also FAIL (918/907 ms). Full stack traces are in that XML/log. Failure: A completed removal must not receive another confirmation; size=32, peer=candidate-work-32-departed-3. Mechanism: pruneOfflinePeers snapshots candidates at UrlResolver.kt:12401, then its age loop at :12422 reacquires a retired lifetime after another caller released it; :12424 invokes isPeerReachableForPrune without checking current membership, reaching NetworkProvider.dial at :27309 for an already removed peer. Proposed fix: after acquiring ownership and before any confirmation, reject a candidate whose descriptor/lifetime is no longer current, in the shared confirmation path (also covers scheduled and fast-path callers). Initial baseline1 was a compilation error from using a private-property spelling rather than its existing public getter; corrected before behavioral evidence, and it does not count as fail-first proof.
OBSERVED (2026-10-21 23:06 UTC): Fail-first test-only checkpoint pushed: https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/commit/20babbe . Added the source fix only after that push: shared isPeerReachableForPrune now checks descriptor/lifetime currency before dialing, so all three prune callers retain their existing outcome handling and ownership release. Fixed-head work-count run is active. Ordinary rebase refused the uncommitted source edit; repeated with --autostash so latest main is checked without dropping local work. Gap-2 source includes contact-only peers (same timestamp, unchanged descriptor), route refreshes, and replacement lifetimes; gap-4 source now drives 10,000 operations through real isolated provider-backed persistent opens, with 16 concurrent callers and retained replay bound 8.
OBSERVED (2026-10-21 23:08 UTC): Correctly rejected obsolete dial attempts after the resolver guard, then the UNCHANGED work test reached a second real failure at N=256: 32,376 published snapshot reference copies exceed the 16,384 bound; all runner attempts fail. Source/bytecode comparison explains it: resolver pins protocol 0.0.1429, whose PeerSnapshot is array-backed; Protocol main already replaced that implementation with persistent keyed indexes in https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlProtocol/pull/750 (merged 2026-10-21 14:28:35 UTC, https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlProtocol/commit/15bc62a6c2489ebd3c6ae727597da7da9d5d903d). This is an already-fixed upstream bug not yet consumed here, not justification to loosen the assertion. Checking published versions now; this brief forbids publication. If no fixed artifact exists, dependency release is an external prerequisite, while the other test work can continue.
OBSERVED (2026-10-21 23:10 UTC): Maven metadata confirms latest/release remains protocol 0.0.1429; no published fixed snapshot artifact exists. Asked the release owner asynchronously to publish Protocol main and supply its coordinate; did not publish anything. Gap-3 passing acceptance/full-suite/green CI depends on that artifact, while gap-2 baseline is running and gap-4 remains ready to compile. The unchanged failed work test is already durably pushed; no assertion was loosened. Note: report-challenge skill's auto-merge conflicts with this brief's no-merge rule and is not applicable to this expected test finding, so no challenge was sent.
OBSERVED (2026-10-21 23:11 UTC): Rebased onto resolver main c7dce77 (release-coordinate preparation), preserving the fail-first test unchanged. Current durable source-fix checkpoint: https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/commit/f5ac9fe124f9871f7447df7b0ae1ab8aca281260 . The original test-only proof remains https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/commit/20babbe208ec699928a1a73cb7063195661b4175 ; rebased test-only commit is https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/commit/7963d58 . No PR exists yet. A push with default --force-with-lease rejected because this shallow checkout had no remote-tracking branch; verified the exact remote head and pushed with an explicit expected SHA lease. Gap-2 baseline remains active. No subagents were started.
OBSERVED (2026-10-21 23:12 UTC): Gap-2 baseline completed all 64 recovery rounds (64,000 recoveries) and final 1,000 removals, then caught an incorrect fixture expectation: it expected 1,000 network attempts although 750 peers correctly retain two accepted routes after refresh, producing 1,750 attempts. This is NOT a main defect and does not count as mutation evidence. Corrected the measurement to assert exactly 1,000 completed confirmation warnings AND exactly the sum of retained route counts in network attempts; all preservation/removal/scale assertions remain. Full stack trace is in R2-refusals-baseline.xml. Healthy execution reached that assertion in 14.941 seconds, comfortably under the initially chosen 120-second safeguard.
OBSERVED (2026-10-21 23:14 UTC): Gap-2 corrected scenario passes first attempt (20.782 seconds, R2-refusals-green.xml, no attempt-history). Checkpoint committed and pushed as https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/commit/f5c59ee . Started mandatory mutation control: locally replace the resolver's captured-evidence removePeer(candidate) with the previous lifetime-only removePeer(candidate.peerId, candidate.lifetime) while keeping the test unchanged. Current production source mutation is temporary and saved restoration is R2-resolver-before-removal-mutation.kt outside the repo. No mutation changes will be committed.
OBSERVED (2026-10-21 23:16 UTC): Gap-2 mutation control FAILS first attempt in 1.268 seconds; native attempts 1/2/3 all FAIL, each reports round 0 removed 500 peers despite newer contact evidence. Restored the source exactly (git diff empty for UrlResolver.kt), then the SAME test passes first attempt with no attempt history (R2-refusals-restored.xml). This establishes the required behavior change without changing the test. Gap-4 baseline is starting next. Fresh protocol source clone at r1-R2-protocol confirms main 0ed6401... still declares 0.0.1429 despite including the later persistent-index fix; read its README build/provider/provenance/capacity contracts. No protocol code changes or artifact publication.
OBSERVED (2026-10-21 23:18 UTC): Dedicated test review pass: gap 2 covers equal-time successful evidence with an unchanged descriptor, changed accepted routes, same-ID replacement tokens, duplicate stale removers, 16 deterministically overlapping lifetime owners, exact service preservation, and later verifier reacquisition/removal callbacks. Gap 3 forces shared-snapshot overlap at the network dependency boundary, measures actual dials plus registry publication/index diagnostics, retains callbacks, and checks empty retained indexes. Gap 4 drives the public persistent-open path through actual provider handlers; its five phases separately account for normal execution, proven zero admission, accepted-prefix failure, cancellation after handler entry, and prune refusal/replacement. Cancelled Future results cannot hide failures: every worker also records any thrown failure in a separate queue, and every accepted cancellation's public error text/cause is checked. This review caught and corrected a compile-only reference to a private exception class: the test now asserts its public UrlResolutionException contract plus full error text. That compilation result is not a bug or fail-first evidence. No visibility was changed. README considered: current public cleanup/retry contracts already describe the behavior; no public API was added.
OBSERVED (2026-10-21 23:20 UTC): Gap-4 first behavioral run fails at wave 0 because its fixture wrote 16 replay rows directly into ForwardedDiscoveryBookkeeping and then incorrectly expected pruneStaleDiscoveredServices to enforce the forwarding cap. Source proves that cap is enforced only inside shouldForwardDiscoveredServiceToPeer; injected-provider nodes cannot reach that path because sendDiscoveredServiceAnnouncementsToPeer returns when localHost is null. This is a fixture error, NOT a newly found main defect, and is not counted as fail-first evidence. Refuted the proposed replay-cache-cap check for this backend rather than add an unrelated production sweep to satisfy an incorrect fixture. Corrected the test to shrink the actual in-memory network buffer to 128 bytes and send 1,024-byte payloads through real RPCs, asserting both the reached high-water count and its 16-stream bound, alongside the unchanged drained-stream/worker/index/subscription/FD/thread assertions. The accepted failure, cancellation, and prune verdicts/10,000-operation scale/120-second safeguard remain unchanged. Current artifact-release dependency remains pending.
OBSERVED (2026-10-21 23:22 UTC): Resource fixture review clarified that snapshot.maximumBufferedBytesForOneDestination is the maximum CURRENT per-destination retention, not a historical high-water mark. Its zero after drained wave 0 is correct. The test now forces the shrink limit deterministically: stall all sixteen provider readers at wave 0, wait within a hard 20-second coordinator bound until all real writes fill exactly 128 bytes each, assert aggregate 2,048 bytes and per-destination 128, then resume. After every drained wave it asserts current maximum zero. This corrects the measurement timing rather than changing any production bound or replacing a failing production behavior with a weaker result. No additional main defect established by these fixture corrections.
OBSERVED: Added failure-path cleanup for the resource fixture's initial stalled readers: the test records its own provider IDs and resumes them before shutting down its executor, except after the fabric has already closed. This ensures a failed initial-buffer assertion cannot strand blocked real writers during cleanup. No verdict, operation count, timeout, or production source changed.
OBSERVED (2026-10-21 23:23 UTC): Gap-4 scenario PASSES first attempt in 27.800 seconds with no attempt-history (R2-resources-baseline4.xml): 10,000 operations, 16 real provider nodes, 2,000 typed refusals, 2,000 accepted-prefix failures, 2,000 accepted-call cancellations and 2,000 replacement/prune cycles, plus normal requests. The first wave forces all sixteen 128-byte buffers full before resuming; every drained wave checks zero live streams/buffered bytes/handlers, balanced client-stream opens/closes, live registry/index bounds, fixed subscriptions, and joined shutdown checks threads and FDs. Checkpoint https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/commit/ff95cfa . Added failure-path stall cleanup before checkpoint; final-head runs will cover it. Started mandatory local mutation restoring the pre-typed classifier (remove typed RpcFrameNotAdmittedException acceptance, leave legacy exact-message acceptance). Source backup is R2-resolver-before-retry-mutation.kt; temporary mutation will not be committed.
OBSERVED (2026-10-21 23:25 UTC): Gap-4 typed-classifier mutation FAILS on first attempt; all three native runner attempts fail at the safe-retry phase because the proven zero-admission exception is incorrectly treated as an ambiguous write. Original full stack traces are preserved in R2-resources-mutation.xml. Restored source exactly (UrlResolver.kt git diff empty) and started restored-source verification with the same committed resource test. The mutation was not committed. All three tests and the source guard are durably pushed on tests/r2-candidate-churn; the only cross-lane prerequisite remains publication of the already-merged protocol snapshot fix.
OBSERVED (2026-10-21 23:27:38 UTC): current-head resources run 1 PASS on attempt 1, no attempt-history, 17040 ms; HEAD ff95cfa1310995ef4532670c973a0633746e5a51; XML R2-final-resources-1.xml.
OBSERVED (2026-10-21 23:28 UTC): Restored resource scenario PASSES attempt 1 in 17.040 seconds; R2-resources-restored.xml has no attempt-history. Started the bounded final-head batch on ff95cfa1310995ef4532670c973a0633746e5a51: five recovery runs and four more resource runs (plus the restored resource run makes five). Each call fetches/rebases first, aborts if HEAD changes, and aborts on any failed or retried test rather than continuing. One family runs at a time. Manifest is R2-final-run-manifest.json; every result also appends here immediately. Publication rechecked at 23:25: protocol latest/release remains 0.0.1429 and the next 0.0.1430 POM returns 404.
OBSERVED / code-review pass: The source guard runs in the shared confirmation path, after the existing caller owns a candidate and before any network work; every caller still releases its claim through its existing finally block. It neither holds registry locks across network calls nor changes completed-failure/removal semantics. Refused same-time success and route changes remain protected by captured evidence. Upstream work failure is specifically the old PeerSnapshot.removedAt middle-removal copy: holding fifteen prefix candidates forces the leader to remove the middle repeatedly, unlike a simple front-removal walk. The consumer count guard therefore catches the array-copy class through actual prune cleanup; Protocol main's persistent keyed snapshots already fix that class. No production service, visibility increase, mock, reflection, timeout increase, iteration decrease, test skip, CI rerun, merge or deploy has occurred.
OBSERVED (2026-10-21 23:28:45 UTC): current-head refusals run 1 PASS on attempt 1, no attempt-history, 32352 ms; HEAD ff95cfa1310995ef4532670c973a0633746e5a51; XML R2-final-refusals-1.xml.

OBSERVED (2026-10-21 23:30:19 UTC): Plan state: required audit/docs/source reading DONE; gap-2 baseline and removal mutation DONE, current-head repeats 2/5; gap-3 real bug test-only proof and resolver fix DONE, full passing acceptance BLOCKED by unpublished protocol snapshot fix; gap-4 baseline and typed-retry mutation/restoration DONE, current-head repeats 1/5. Full suite and PR remain pending. Shared full-suite lock is currently held by PID 63269 (P2-full.xml), verified with lslocks/ps. No subagents, deployments, publications or CI mutations. The tracked final-run batch is session 17384 (hard cap 3600 seconds); stop at any failure rather than rerunning unchanged.
OBSERVED (2026-10-21 23:30:31 UTC): current-head refusals run 3 PASS on attempt 1, no attempt-history, 22757 ms; HEAD ff95cfa1310995ef4532670c973a0633746e5a51; XML R2-final-refusals-3.xml.
OBSERVED (2026-10-21 23:31:12 UTC): current-head refusals run 4 PASS on attempt 1, no attempt-history, 21495 ms; HEAD ff95cfa1310995ef4532670c973a0633746e5a51; XML R2-final-refusals-4.xml.
OBSERVED (2026-10-21 23:31:58 UTC): current-head refusals run 5 PASS on attempt 1, no attempt-history, 27863 ms; HEAD ff95cfa1310995ef4532670c973a0633746e5a51; XML R2-final-refusals-5.xml.
OBSERVED (2026-10-21 23:34 UTC): Final-head recovery verification reached 5/5 clean first-attempt passes (32.352, 27.562, 22.757, 21.495, 27.863 seconds). Resource repeat 2 caught a fixture-ordering race and stopped the batch: first attempt FAIL at 6.393 seconds, native attempts 2/3 also FAIL (6.634/30.638 seconds), R2-final-resources-2.xml. Full stack traces are retained there; primary failure is Expected an exception ... UrlResolutionException ... but was completed successfully, at resource-test line 205. Mechanism: line 258 releases the held provider immediately after Future.cancel(true), before line 259 waits for the client to observe interruption and exit. A provider response can then win the public sendRequest response-versus-interruption race, legitimately completing successfully. This is a defect in our test coordinator, not evidence of an implementation bug. The exact failing test already exists remotely at ff95cfa. Fix: preserve every assertion/work count/timeout, but wait for all cancelled callers' finally blocks before releasing provider replies. This forces the intended accepted-but-interrupted condition independently of scheduler ordering. Applying fix-flakey-test guidance (already read TESTING/PHILOSOPHY); no retry or timeout change.
OBSERVED (2026-10-21 23:37 UTC): The resource test with ordered cancellation PASSES first attempt in 38.881 seconds, no attempt-history (R2-resources-ordered.xml). No assertion/workload/timeout was changed. Pushed the coordinator fix as https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/commit/7e055eb . Because the introducing test changed, restarted the typed-retry mutation control against this exact final test before collecting its five clean current-head runs. Current temporary source mutation is backed up in R2-resolver-retry-final-backup.kt and will be restored. Earlier five recovery passes on ff95cfa remain recorded; fresh final-head evidence will be tied to the updated head, without counting a failed/retried result as a pass.
OBSERVED (2026-10-21 23:39 UTC): The final ordered resource fixture still FAILS the pre-typed-classifier mutation on native attempts 1/2/3; exact attempt times are in R2-resources-ordered-mutation.xml. Restored production source exactly (git diff empty), then launched ten serialized final-head checks on 7e055ebc5247269d97e2f4da09311c48750b538b: resources 5×, then recovery 5×. This replaces the stopped ff95cfa batch; previous counts are history, not claimed as five clean resource runs. Manifest: R2-final-head-7e055eb-manifest.json. Every call fetches/rebases, aborts on changed HEAD or any failure/retry, and appends first-attempt results here. Tracked process session 16649 is replaced by the actual tool session reported in the next update; hard limit remains 3600 seconds. No production mutation remains.
OBSERVED / correction: The active final-head batch is tool session 57635, not the placeholder session mentioned above; no session 16649 was started. Ordered resource mutation times: attempts 1/2/3 FAIL in 1.202/1.178/1.184 seconds. Only tracked batch 57635 is active now.

OBSERVED (2026-10-21 23:53–23:55 UTC): The publication blocker cleared during live handoff preparation: metadata now reports protocol 0.0.1430. Downloaded that jar and verified it contains RegistrySnapshot.class, retains getPeerRemovalCandidate/removePeer(candidate), and exposes the same work diagnostics. Updated the resolver's single production dependency pin to 0.0.1430, with the existing upstream fix URL in its build comment, and started the unchanged work-count test. This supersedes prior BLOCKED-on-publication notes. No central handoff was created (only handoff CLI health was checked); work continues toward the original full-suite/green-PR bar. No R2 artifact was published. An unused fresh r1-R2-evidence clone is clean on main; it contains no local work and no artifact branch was created.
OBSERVED (2026-10-21 23:58 UTC): Joined the machine-wide full-suite lock queue with a tracked command and 9,000-second hard cap. Its runner refuses to start unless all three target families have five clean first-attempt passes on the exact final head, then fetches/rebases again after acquiring the lock and records the head before invoking the full local suite. If admission arrives before those preconditions, it exits without starting a suite. This safely queues the gate while the new protocol dependency is being verified; it does not run another full suite concurrently. Current lock owner has changed from P2 to P1, with another waiter ahead of R2. Full-run tool session will be recorded after the launch result; no unbounded marker/PID polling loop was created.
OBSERVED (2026-10-22 00:01 UTC): The unchanged candidate-backed work test PASSED on protocol 0.0.1430 at attempt 1 (3,583 ms; no attempt-history in R2-work-1430.xml). This confirms the resolver current-candidate check plus the already-merged upstream keyed snapshot implementation satisfy the N=32/256/1000 work bounds. The only pending source change is the protocol dependency pin and its explanatory comment. Full-suite lock waiter is PID 2007 under bounded timeout PID 2006; it will not start tests without the clean-head five-pass manifest.
OBSERVED (2026-10-22 00:01:36 UTC): current-head work run 1 PASS on attempt 1, no attempt-history, 1434 ms; HEAD 776b0d45cca07b7f1038c6d9478232744989a89f; XML R2-final-1430-work-1.xml.
Plan update (2026-10-22 00:02 UTC): [done] Required reading, public-API review and invariant table. [done] Gap 2 test and mutation; [done] gap 3 fail-first test, source fix and published upstream dependency; [done] gap 4 test and typed-retry mutation. [in progress] Five first-attempt passes per family on dependency head 776b0d45cca07b7f1038c6d9478232744989a89f, followed by the single locked full suite. [pending] Non-draft PR and required Actions green, final process cleanup.
OBSERVED / final dedicated review (2026-10-22 00:02 UTC): Reviewed all three complete test files and the three-line source guard against the final 0.0.1430 dependency. Tests use actual public confirmation/open/handler paths with in-memory fault controls, keep all original workload and work-count assertions, and close subscriptions, executors, nodes and fabrics. Retained maps/callbacks in the recovery test are test-owned and cleared between rounds; final cleanup proves refused verifier claims are released. The churn test keeps providers held until every cancellation has settled, checks each worker's separate failure queue, counts exact transport close ownership, forces the real 128-byte buffer bound and checks zero retained work after each of 625 waves. The current-candidate guard changes only speculative confirmation admission, preserves existing finally release and failure reporting, and applies to all callers of the shared helper. No further code changes identified. Repository workflow names its combined required build/test job bld-build; the brief's informational treatment of kotlin.build (remote) controls CI acceptance.

OBSERVED (2026-10-22 00:15 UTC): Final-target gate complete on https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/commit/776b0d45cca07b7f1038c6d9478232744989a89f : gap 2 recovery 5/5, gap 3 work 5/5, gap 4 resources 5/5, each native attempt 1 with no attempt-history. R2-final-1430-ready.json contains all fifteen XML paths and the exact head; no more targeted verification planned. Full-suite waiter PID 2007 remains behind active owner 865 and waiter 60163. No R2 full suite has started, no PR exists, and all code is already pushed on tests/r2-candidate-churn. Findings/PR evidence carry all required fail-first and mutation counts.
OBSERVED (2026-10-22 00:20 UTC): All fifteen final targeted runs remain first-attempt clean; no additional runs started after their five-pass bar. Full-suite lock waiter PID 2007 is alive under timeout PID 2006, behind owner 865 and waiter 60163; owner 865 has a live test.bash child. R2-full.log is empty because admission has not occurred, and no R2-full.xml or summary exists. This is a shared admission wait, not a passing full-suite result. Working tree is clean; all five scoped source files are pushed. PR body is prepared but PR creation waits for the required full suite.
OBSERVED (2026-10-22 00:25 UTC): No queue transition yet: active full-suite owner 865 and waiter 60163 remain ahead of R2's bounded waiter 2007. R2 has run zero full suites; all three scoped tests remain 5/5 attempt-1 clean. Gap 2 and gap 4 mutation controls found no new main defect; gap 3 found the retired-candidate confirmation bug fixed in f5ac9fe124f9871f7447df7b0ae1ab8aca281260, and exposed the already-fixed upstream snapshot cost now consumed by dependency commit 776b0d45cca07b7f1038c6d9478232744989a89f. No PR or CI run has been started by this lane.
OBSERVED (2026-10-22 00:30 UTC): R2 remains admitted only to the lock queue, not the suite: owner 865 and waiter 60163 are unchanged; R2 waiter 2007 remains alive. Full-run log has no output because the runner starts only after lock acquisition. Final test evidence remains fifteen first-attempt successes on unchanged pushed head 776b0d45cca07b7f1038c6d9478232744989a89f. No additional tests, code edits, PR creation or remote actions during this interval.
OBSERVED (2026-10-22 00:32 UTC): Full-suite owner 865 exited; /proc/locks now needed only to distinguish admission, but R2 log remains empty and waiter 60163 is still alive. R2 waiter 2007 is next in the prior FIFO queue. No R2 suite started yet.
OBSERVED (2026-10-22 00:35 UTC): /proc/locks confirms 60163 is now the active full-suite owner and R2 PID 2007 is the first waiter (two later waiters are behind R2). R2 log remains empty; no suite has started for this lane. The next action remains the single locked full-suite run, followed by PR creation and required Actions checks; all code and targeted proof remain unchanged and pushed.
OBSERVED (2026-10-22 00:40 UTC): Still first waiter behind suite owner 60163. R2-full.log remains empty, and R2 has not started a full suite. Bounded waiter PID 2007 is alive after about 41 minutes. The fifteen final target records, clean pushed head and prepared PR description are unchanged. No further target verification, code edits or remote state changes occurred.
OBSERVED (2026-10-22 00:41:13 UTC): R2 acquired the full-suite lock and started its ONE full local suite on exact verified head 776b0d45cca07b7f1038c6d9478232744989a89f. Post-admission fetch/rebase found no main changes, working tree was clean, and all fifteen target XML records passed the manifest precondition. Command is scripts/test.bash --local --test . --log /tmp/claude-501/-code/2abf611d-5e04-4919-84a8-d7b72869d40c/scratchpad/out/R2-full.xml under the machine-wide flock and existing hard deadline. Native full-suite counts are pending.
OBSERVED (2026-10-22 00:45 UTC): The single locked full suite remains active under Python runner 21990 / flock 2007. Its log has advanced through completed build-script compilation records (eight at 00:44); these are compilation records, not passed tests. No native full-suite summary exists yet. The verified source head and fifteen first-attempt target records remain unchanged. No PR or CI watch started before the suite gate.
OBSERVED (2026-10-22 00:50 UTC): Full suite is still active on the same head. Its native JVM PID 22077 is using CPU and has advanced from build-script completion records into repository-wide test-file diagnostics; the Python runner and flock remain alive. These diagnostics are not counted as test results. No full-suite XML summary exists yet, and no extra suite or target run has started.
OBSERVED (2026-10-22 00:55 UTC): The full suite is executing native forked test JVMs (four children observed, with IDs turning over between checks). The earlier long-running stress child exited; its verdict remains pending in the final XML, so no pass is inferred from exit alone. Full suite has no terminal summary yet. Read-only comparison confirms tests/testCandidatePruneStormHasBoundedWork.kts is byte-for-byte unchanged from test-only fail-first commit 7963d58003f2e726dacb67d7831c447935790b4c through final head 776b0d45cca07b7f1038c6d9478232744989a89f.
OBSERVED (2026-10-22 01:00 UTC): The original locked full suite continues, with forked child test processes changing between checks. Its native runner has emitted the existing bounded idle-control message for a long-running child; no terminal verdict or XML summary yet. Parent JVM and runner remain alive. No restart/re-run, timeout change, assertion change, extra verification round or external write during this interval.
OBSERVED (2026-10-22 01:05 UTC): The same full-suite run is still active on head 776b0d45cca07b7f1038c6d9478232744989a89f. Native child test PIDs continue to change; no full-suite summary or native XML totals yet. The existing overall deadline and native per-test watchdogs are unchanged. No extra target/full-suite invocation, code edit or GitHub write has occurred during this interval.
OBSERVED (2026-10-22 01:10 UTC): Same full suite, still active with changing child test PIDs. It has not emitted a terminal summary, so full-suite pass/fail/first-attempt counts remain pending. No new branch changes, tests, PRs or external actions. All final targeted proofs remain intact on the unchanged pushed source head.
OBSERVED (2026-10-22 01:15 UTC): Full-suite execution continues with four native forked children observed and fresh child IDs between checks. Parent runner, lock and overall deadline remain active; no XML summary yet. Nothing has been counted as a full-suite pass before native completion. Source branch, fifteen first-attempt target records and PR body are unchanged.
OBSERVED / scope cross-check (2026-10-22 01:16 UTC): The audit's same-round refusal assertion already has an exact public-path test on main: tests/testPruneRefusalDoesNotRetryFastPathInSameRound.kts, function testPruneRefusalDoesNotRetryFastPathInSameRound. It forces three real failed gossip sends while an age verifier owns the lifetime, records a same-descriptor keepalive, then asserts exactly ONE warning across age and fast paths and a second warning/removal only in the next maintenance call. Source uses a per-call verifiedLifetimes set to share that decision. Therefore the subpremise that this particular assertion needs a new test is refuted by existing source; this lane adds the missing 16-caller N=32/256/1000 work bounds and 64-round population recovery rather than duplicating that scenario. The active full suite includes the existing test; its first-attempt verdict will be read from XML before claiming it verified. Existing test URL: https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/blob/c7dce77f156849735a52844202f8f19d26813688/tests/testPruneRefusalDoesNotRetryFastPathInSameRound.kts . No source/test edits or extra runs resulted from this check.
OBSERVED (2026-10-22 01:20 UTC): Same locked full-suite run remains active. Long-running child 80359 exited, and newer children are executing; no pass is inferred until the native XML is written. The same-round refusal cross-check is recorded above as already covered by a dedicated existing public test, not silently omitted or deferred. No source/test changes were made during the full run.
OBSERVED (2026-10-22 01:25 UTC): The single full suite is still executing; newer forked test PIDs continue to replace completed children. No native XML totals or terminal summary yet. Source/head and all target evidence are unchanged. PR creation remains gated on reading this full-suite result; no CI has been started or rerun by R2.
OBSERVED: Full local suite completed: {"head": "776b0d45cca07b7f1038c6d9478232744989a89f", "exitCode": 0, "total": 2389, "success": 2389, "failed": 0, "attemptHistories": 2, "firstAttemptPass": 2387}; see R2-full.xml for native records.
OBSERVED (2026-10-22 01:30 UTC): Full suite still active after roughly 48 minutes, with fresh forked test PIDs at the last check. No native terminal summary exists yet. The same original suite invocation and hard deadline remain in force; no extra runs, source changes or GitHub writes. Final targeted proof remains 5/5 attempt 1 for each of the three new tests.
OBSERVED (2026-10-22 01:30 UTC; corrects the immediately preceding raced status note): Full suite terminated before the final status read. Native totals: 2,389 eventual successes, zero final failures, TWO attempt-history entries; therefore only 2,387 first-attempt passes and two first-attempt failures. Not treating the run as clean. Inspecting both full native failure stacks now; no PR/CI started.
OBSERVED (2026-10-22 01:32 UTC): Full-suite native records confirm all scoped tests passed attempt 1 with no history: candidate work 1,252 ms; recovery 31,264 ms; resources 57,654 ms; existing same-round refusal 2,049 ms. Two unrelated existing tests failed first attempt then passed attempt 2: cancelled discovery recovery (2,295/2,424 ms) and retained observable parameters (3,700/2,375 ms). Full stacks are in R2-full.xml and were read in full. INFER: both concern close/cancel ordering in existing fixtures; no causal link to the three-line prune guard is established. Asked the owner asynchronously for scope/ownership direction before editing files excluded by the brief. Continuing authorized PR preparation with transparent first-attempt counts; no assertion or timeout was changed and no CI rerun occurred.
OBSERVED (2026-10-22 01:32 UTC): Opened NON-DRAFT PR https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/pull/1414 on unchanged verified head 776b0d45cca07b7f1038c6d9478232744989a89f after fresh fetch/rebase, existing-PR check and push. Read back exact content and open/non-draft state; all verification counts and both existing first-attempt failures are present. Body comparison normalized trailing newlines only. Started watch-build 0.0.21 (session 28983), plain watch mode, explicit bld-build gate, 240-second polling and 5,400-second hard cap. No merge/enqueue/rerequest/rerun/deploy/publication action taken.
OBSERVED (2026-10-22 01:35 UTC): PR https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/pull/1414 is open/non-draft on the verified head; required bld-build is pending. Watchman is running at 240-second cadence under a 5,400-second hard cap from ~01:32 UTC. It reports non-required kotlin-build-ci-test suite 107584852768 queued with zero runs since the head push; no rerequest/warm/restart attempted because this brief forbids rerequests and treats remote status as informational. Read report-challenge SKILL.md: its CLI “enqueues it in the merge queue ... waits until merged,” which conflicts with this brief's no-enqueue/no-merge rule, so no auto-merging challenge call was made. Full native first-attempt totals (2387 pass / 2 fail) and scoped first-attempt successes are already in the PR. Ownership question for the two existing fixture failures remains pending; their files are unchanged.
OBSERVED / read-only existing-failure analysis (2026-10-22 01:39 UTC): Retained-parameter test waits on a server-side ServiceClientConnection.onClose latch, then immediately sends from its client PersistentRpcConnection; it does not join the client's awaitCurrentTransportClosed future. Resolver source documents that public future as completing only after reader cleanup. Its failure stack is a local StreamClosedBeforeWriteException, while the supported retry classifier intentionally accepts only full-frame RpcFrameNotAdmittedException (or the legacy exact diagnostic). INFER: server closure can beat client reader cleanup, so the fixture can issue its intended later request on the old transport. This remains an unverified mechanism until a controlled reproducer establishes it; no fix guessed. The cancellation test bridge explicitly cancels its stream future then counts down cancellationObserved (UrlResolver.kt:5647–5651); its test subsequently asserts an outer Future.cancel(true), which can race outer completion. Native failure does not reveal whether that completion succeeded or failed, so the end-to-end outcome remains unknown. No excluded source/test file was edited, and no extra tests ran.
OBSERVED (2026-10-22 01:40 UTC): Required Actions still pending per watchman's four-minute checks. No ownership reply on the two existing local first-attempt failures; original R2 scope remains unchanged, and those files have not been edited. Plain watch session 28983 remains the CI monitor, with a hard stop around 03:02 UTC (90 minutes after start). No rerequest/rerun, queue, merge, deploy or artifact publication action. Current source tree is clean.
OBSERVED (2026-10-22 01:43 UTC): Watchman's 01:40 poll received HTTP 403: API rate limit exceeded for GitHub user 216437543. Queried the non-consuming /rate_limit endpoint once to inspect reset rather than guessing: at 01:42:19 it reported core limit 5000, used 17, remaining 4983, next reset 02:41:57 UTC, showing the preceding hourly window had just reset around 01:41:57. Existing watcher remains alive and will resume its normal 240-second cycle; no extra PR-status poll or CI rerun. No attribution to a particular other worker is inferred. Recorded locally because report-challenge's automatic merge/enqueue is prohibited in this lane.
OBSERVED (2026-10-22 01:47 UTC): Watchman's 01:44 poll recovered from the preceding API quota error and again reported required bld-build pending. The non-required remote suite remains undispatched. Original CI watch deadline remains ~03:02 UTC; no reset of its 90-minute clock. The scope question remains unanswered; excluded files are unchanged, while the PR transparently lists both full-suite first-attempt failures.
OBSERVED (2026-10-22 01:50 UTC): One read-only job-step drill-down in the 01:48 assessment confirmed Actions run https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/actions/runs/39706215284 on exact head 776b0d45cca07b7f1038c6d9478232744989a89f. Required bld-build started 01:31:55 UTC; build completed SUCCESS at 01:35:18; Run tests is executing since 01:35:18, so it is not waiting for a runner. Job URL: https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/actions/runs/39706215284/job/119586746051 . Stored raw metadata in R2-ci-run.json/R2-ci-jobs.json. No rerun triggered. Existing local failures are in existing test files; whether either predates the dependency change is NOT established by this lane, so they are not claimed proven preexisting/non-regressions.
OBSERVED (2026-10-22 01:58 UTC): Live PR state became BEHIND. Fetch showed new main commits 865af13 (release 0.0.1331) and 9f282df (retirement-recovery direct-route changes, source plus five tests); clean rebase produced 394a2fa0f956ea9365ef7942a89a79ab6fbff443. Old verified head remains remote PR head 776b0d45cca07b7f1038c6d9478232744989a89f; it is not silently presented as verification of the new source. Checkpointing rebased code on wip/r2-rebased-9f282df while preserving the existing PR head until its required new-head gate. Fresh 5×3 targeted verification and a locked full suite are necessary because main changed production code. No user scope reply, no excluded files edited.

OBSERVED (2026-10-22 02:06 UTC): Created central handoff url://handoff/handoffs/hf-2026-10-22-verify-rebased-r2-coverage-and-finish-required-ci (WUI https://www.handoff.wasmserver.com/handoffs/hf-2026-10-22-verify-rebased-r2-coverage-and-finish-required-ci). It embeds branch links, exact proofs/native failure stacks, unresolved scope question, prior/full counts, rebase state and both local runner helpers, so a scratch wipe does not lose the findings. This is an interim checkpoint; verification is continuing. Raw XML/build caches are deliberately not committed as test/build artifacts.
OBSERVED (2026-10-22 02:23 UTC): New-head resource repetition 1 failed attempt one at 30,592 ms on “Joined shutdown retained a thread created during the churn”; default attempt two passed 28,490 ms. Repeat batch correctly stopped (only work 5/5 completed on 394a2fa). Initial outside-workspace diagnostic was rejected before executing any test; moved a temporary probe into tests/ and it passed attempt one (25,433 ms), without identifying a survivor. Kept the committed original unchanged. A narrower probe then recycled only the TEST-OWNED executor at drained-wave boundaries while preserving the 625×16 real RPC workload. It failed native attempts 1/2/3 at 6,611 / 11,949 / 5,060 ms (waves 65/117/46). Captured workers pool-r2-owned-1054/1888/737 remained alive while workers.isTerminated was true; captured stacks are inside ThreadPoolExecutor.processWorkerExit/tryTerminate/ReentrantLock, proving executor task termination is not a physical worker-thread join. No production reader/fabric leak is established by this evidence.
Mechanism to fix: the fixture calls ExecutorService.awaitTermination, then treats every new pool-* thread still alive as a component leak, without joining its OWN worker Thread objects. Reproducer: R2-owned-pool-diagnostic.xml, all three native attempts fail on real drained-wave shutdown with the stack above; a controlled public ThreadFactory post-run latch will force the exact executor-terminated/thread-alive condition independently of hardware. Proposed fixture correction: record its own workers with a delegating default ThreadFactory, join those exact threads after executor termination, then keep the existing global thread-baseline assertion unchanged. No timeout, operation count, fault phase or production assertion will be weakened. This is a test-owner join correction, not a claimed new main defect.
OBSERVED (2026-10-22 02:27 UTC): Controlled public ThreadFactory experiment PASSED attempt one (1,244 ms, no history): its ExecutorService is terminated while the wrapper thread is held after Runnable.run returns; the original raw Thread.isAlive check is false, and after Thread.join it is true. This forces the exact oracle condition independent of hardware. Applied the narrow fixture correction: record default-factory worker Threads, physically join them after unchanged 20-second executor termination, then leave the global retained-thread assertion untouched. Same join in finally. No production change, timeout increase, iteration reduction, skipped phase or weaker assertion. Applying the identical join to the repeatedly failing public-path shutdown probe before rerunning it. Official JDK contracts: https://docs.oracle.com/en/java/javase/21/docs/api/java.base/java/util/concurrent/ExecutorService.html and https://docs.oracle.com/en/java/javase/21/docs/api/java.base/java/lang/Thread.html .
OBSERVED (2026-10-22 02:37 UTC): Same narrowed shutdown probe now PASSES attempt one after physically joining its owned workers (R2-owned-pool-joined-recovered.xml; no history), retaining all 625×16 operations and the same per-wave live-thread check that failed 3/3 before the join. Earlier joined attempt never executed (0 ms) because kotlin.directory refused connections; endpoint recovered to HTTP 200 with a valid POM before the successful retry. Committed original fixture correction as e4893be0d0cbe0ee5e65c733a2571d231e01113d, pushed and verified on https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/tree/wip/r2-rebased-9f282df . Temporary diagnostic scripts were moved out of the source repository to out/R2-diagnostics, not committed. Original production/resource assertions and 120-second test timeout are unchanged. Starting final e4893be repeats, resources first; new-head full gate remains queued and has not run.
