Handoff: Validate the rebased UrlResolver reader fix on protocol 0.0.1434 and update its PR
Written: 2026-10-23T06:20:46.768512+00:00
RE-VERIFY: this is a write-time snapshot. Read https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/pull/1185 with gh, inspect its remote head and origin/main, and inspect the evidence XML before acting. Fresh observations take precedence. Ask whether the pending additional-full-suite permission has been answered before starting another full run.
Design decisions in force
Owner direction (2026-10-21), verbatim: "Do we have comprehensive e2e tests? Including scale tests as per https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/DocumentationRepository/blob/main/architecture/TESTING.md#extreme-condition-testing-load-fuzzing-failure-injection-and-chaos" / "If there are gaps, have sol write the missing tests." / "Then, do another round, Your goal is to add end-to-end integration tests which identify bugs (the tests should initially fail), and then fix the bug in the implementation."
Current continuation's brief (2026-10-23) says "Run ONE full suite" and "Do NOT wrap it in timeout or any outer deadline shorter than 4 hours of execution." It permits up to two hours waiting for the shared lock and limits the lane to six hours. That one full suite is now complete and clean. Main changed its protocol pin after the suite began; permission for another full suite on the changed dependency was requested through the user-input tool and is pending. The recommended choice is retain main's 0.0.1434 and validate the changed head. Do not silently treat elapsed waiting as permission.
Standing lane constraints:
- Local builds/tests only: scripts/build.bash --local; scripts/test.bash --local --test <file> --log <xml>. Never --remote. Full suites only under flock /tmp/claude-501/complete-suite.lock. Record /sys/fs/cgroup/memory.current before and every few minutes, and memory.events kill-count deltas. Shared memory.max is 10 GiB. No JVM tuning flags.
- Count a pass only when attempt 1 passed and XML has no attempt-history. Diagnose every first-attempt failure; never rerun unchanged to obtain green. Never increase timeout, reduce iterations, skip/disable/delete a test, loosen an assertion, use mocks/reflection, or expose private members for testing.
- No merge, enqueue, artifact publication, deploy, service restart or buildtest deletion/rerequest. Production deployment is not authorized. Required CI here is Actions bld-build; the repository has no separate bld-all-tests/bld-build-release job. Informational remote failure is read once and reported, never rerun.
- GitHub polling no faster than two minutes; CI watch <=90 minutes using build-watchman 0.0.21, watch only. PR body updates use gh api --method PATCH ... --input JSON and an exact read-back. WHY first, Claude footer last. Commits carry Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 noreply@anthropic.com.
- Disk is disposable: clone fresh under workspace/<lane>, checkpoint source and findings remotely at milestones and at least every 30 minutes. Evidence belongs on a wip branch under lane-evidence/, never the PR source branch. Build outputs, downloaded JARs and caches do not belong in Git.
Required reading: full Testing Architecture, especially extreme conditions, deterministic reproducers and one scenario per file; Engineering Philosophy. Both were read in this continuation, along with root README, workflow and prior review. No repository-root AGENTS.md exists.
Mission and remaining work
The requested local full suite on the original published pin passed. Finish changed-head validation for the newer pin, update the still-open existing PR from that candidate, and watch required bld-build without merging. The old 0.0.1433 pin is no longer the appropriate final dependency because main adopted 0.0.1434 for response-encoding cleanup in https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/pull/1500. Do not downgrade main.
What was found and done
- Root cause, established before this continuation: the transport and resolver could both read replies from one persistent stream. UrlProtocol now selects response ownership before stream construction. Resolver requests RpcResponseReader.CALLER, checks ownership before exposing input, closes rejected streams while retaining cleanup errors, and uses runInterruptible to connect provider-exchange blocking reads to caller cancellation. Production diff is 14 added lines / 1 removed line. No further production fix was added here.
- Prior independent coverage/adversarial review found and closed unknown ownership, rejected-stream close errors and held-response shutdown coverage gaps. Public tests use real isolated in-memory providers, exercise concurrent callers and sandbox constructors, and preserve full errors/exception identity and cleanup. The shared-error test is regression coverage: Kotlin addSuppressed already ignores self identity; do not add an unnecessary production check. All prior review findings are resolved.
- Deterministic old-source controls failed: unknown ownership and close-error cases expected IllegalStateException but open returned; held exchange failed the existing five-second cleanup bound while output was still held. Same cases passed unchanged with the existing fix. A fourth same-error-object case also failed on old source and passed unchanged on fixed source. Prior red/fixed branches below preserve source and proofs. File-repository URLs in those controls are temporary test setup, never PR dependencies.
- Prior lane published foundation.url:protocol:0.0.1433 from merged https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlProtocol/commit/54ce82ca04f17affc5fd3757b650f489bc0525fc after https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlProtocol/pull/877. It verified JAR/POM/sidecars and reader bytecode. JAR SHA256 8680d1cf0d7a75c634853664a670058e3fdb9694820632c1454becce7acbc2d8; POM SHA256 276bd1932e8ec096a144feb61e59936dc7a51bac446bc5e8e4ef58424cf498d6. This continuation re-read the live JAR SHA256 sidecar with the same value. Release PR freshly verified merged. No publication performed in this continuation.
- Prior targeted verification on 0.0.1433 passed 52/52 executions: eleven reader/cancellation cases three times plus nineteen neighbours, 30 distinct scenarios, all attempt 1. Previous full suite was stopped after ~57 minutes by its own lane deadline, no XML. That old timeout was not a test failure.
- PUBPROTO2 fresh clone initially fetched main 001e8a762d34fb6300a95b51646131a5b7a8691d. Checked out 9bff7e74134351525383799343f7563a96fc8217 and rebased; unchanged. Exactly one locked full-suite invocation queued 04:42 UTC, acquired 05:00:02 UTC and finished 06:01:03 UTC: 2444/2444 tests passed attempt 1, zero global attempt-history nodes, no failed/skipped test and 17/17 successful buildrule records. Exit 0, 3657.44 seconds execution. Full result, strict checker and logs are in current evidence. It is an exact-source result for 9bff7e74, not for the newer dependency candidate.
- Memory before queue 9,636,290,560 bytes; execution-start 7,402,483,712; sampled peak 10,734,718,976; finish 8,812,625,920. oom_kill stayed at pre-existing 1 for the whole suite. No manual rerun, no source change during that full invocation. The supervisor allowed 4h01m actual execution separately from the two-hour queue allowance; it exited naturally after ~61 minutes.
- Post-suite fetch advanced origin/main to https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlResolver/commit/7fd5b221bdb6f8ba8536d110ce5addfd95c7183d. Its sole change is 2,285 direct pin lines to protocol 0.0.1434; no production/fixture/assertion behavior change. Initial pre-push rebase conflicted with 0.0.1433 pin edits, was aborted and did not push. A commentary typo said 0.0.1437; actual version is 0.0.1434.
- Prepared b066322791a730891950f40bceddd18d1e32b1b8 on current main, preserving 0.0.1434. Compared every changed file to the exact tested source: all 2,296 changes are only literal coordinate substitutions 0.0.1433 -> 0.0.1434. Production, fixtures, assertions, iterations and timeouts are identical. Final diff against current main is only 26 files: production/README/build comment, eleven new cases and twelve provider/wrapper updates. No bulk downgrade remains. New source and comparison are remote.
- Downloaded published 0.0.1434 JAR SHA256 c579805d43c75fa7272dedb877a11d10b38b5aa8f37f1755f0656e3debe7fadf. Javap confirms RpcResponseReader.CALLER/AUTOMATIC, RpcResponseReaderNetworkProvider dial overload and RpcResponseReaderOwnership. Its merged adoption PR identifies response-encoding cleanup https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlProtocol/pull/841 and release https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/UrlProtocol/pull/881; main source 8da0a86f1351b93c40d1dc861416009135deb215. Retain that dependency.
- Newer-pin targeted state: 52/52 executions attempt 1, including all nineteen neighbours. The batch exited 0; all four XML documents have expected counts and no attempt-history or failed build records. The exact full-suite permission remains pending. No second full suite, no candidate PR push, no new CI watch. Actual PR is OPEN, merged=False, head a0dacfc5d9df191c8a711228630cdb04099e609f; body PATCH/read-back records complete original full gate and current changed-head hold.

MERGED; branch deleted, pull head retained; main 54ce82ca contains it |
Main is 7fd5b221bdb6f8ba8536d110ce5addfd95c7183d. The existing PR still pins 0.0.1431 and cannot be called ready before its candidate is pushed and required Actions are green. No code was deployed/restarted/published by this continuation. Previously published 0.0.1433 is on merged protocol main; no published code exists only on an unmerged branch. Main now consumes the separately published 0.0.1434.
Next steps
- Re-verify OPEN state, remote head, main and the latest evidence/results. Read the user response about the second full suite before acting. Current PR branch head is a0dacfc5d9df191c8a711228630cdb04099e609f; never overwrite another actor's changes.
- Recover the rebased candidate and evidence from the linked WIP branches into a fresh workspace clone. Keep protocol 0.0.1434 if main still uses it; re-evaluate any newer pin. Findings are lane-evidence/PUBPROTO2.md. Never push that evidence folder into the PR source branch.
- Verify new targeted results: three bug5-N.xml files with 11 cases each and neighbours.xml with 19, all first attempt and no failed build records. Selectors and check-results.py are in evidence; run-targeted.bash has an absolute old output path that must be adjusted for a fresh machine. Do not repeat already-clean tests without a source or dependency change.
- If the additional full suite is authorized, rebase before building and execute one new-head full suite under flock /tmp/claude-501/complete-suite.lock scripts/test.bash --local --test . --log <xml>, with at least four hours of actual execution available, separate from queue wait. Record memory/kill counts. Reject retry histories even if exit is 0. Diagnose failures with a deterministic public-API reproducer before fixes.
- Once changed-head local gates clear, check PR OPEN/head again, then push the tested candidate using --force-with-lease against its verified current head. Rewrite the PR body WHY first, current 0.0.1434 dependency, exact source/test counts, no stale full-gate note. Keep any unfulfilled hold. PATCH JSON and exact read-back. Preserve footer.
- Watch bld-build with build-watchman 0.0.21, plain --pr (no to-merged), --interval-seconds >=120, outer watch deadline <=90 minutes. Do not enqueue, merge, rerequest/delete remote runs, or deploy. Informational red remote is read once and classified. Stop and report if the cap expires.
- Before finishing, stop every owned command, confirm using ps -eo pid, args -ww, push source/evidence milestones and update this same handoff. Never create a duplicate for this effort.
Operational knowledge
- Required check in this repo is bld-build, building and testing in one Actions job. Its workflow uses --local-and-remote; the lane's own invocations must still be --local.
- Runner XML uses test success=true, not only JUnit testcase, and includes buildrule nodes. check-results.py rejects unexpected/zero scenario counts and attempt-history globally.
- Existing dependency pin warnings and no-package warnings appeared during the clean full run; they are not test verdicts. Test runner's control-socket idle notice explicitly keeps waiting for live child under its monotonic watchdog; inspect actual XML instead of treating it as failure.
- Testing docs say remote must never be red, but explicit lane policy makes it informational and forbids retries; lane policy wins. Handoff README's old auto-merged git PR path is superseded by current create-handoff skill/service CLI. report-challenge CLI auto-enqueues/merges, prohibited in this lane; instruction friction is recorded in WIP evidence.
- Prior remote failures already read once: protocol version check failed before project execution on GitHub-download Broken pipe; old resolver remote failed before upload on TcpServer's 256-handler limit. Old resolver required build lacks the API on 0.0.1431; don't rerun it unchanged. No new-head CI has been triggered.
- Earlier Maven Connection refused warnings aligned with another lane's ContainerNursery replacement; front-listener gap was only inferred, not proven. No production fix/restart was performed by this lane. HCF launch --json emitted human text; prior sanitized evidence is in protocol WIP branch. These are prior observations, not new root-cause claims.
- Current source/evidence worktrees have no user changes or stashes. Downloaded JAR, build outputs and dependency caches are deliberately omitted from Git; live published bytes are accessible from kotlin.directory, with checksums/API evidence preserved.
