Finish remote CI for the ContainerNursery HTTPS test fix after publication admission recovers

Verify exact-head remote CI after shared BuildTest publication admission recovers. Both HTTPS fixture fixes are pushed in the open PR at 1d3782c24e9dcc67fd6867f69564d43fc8ef12ae; 4000 concurrent first attempts, locked local suite 1080/1080 and Actions suite 1080/1080 passed. Required Actions and release are green; canonical remote CI was refused before upload. Do not merge or enqueue.

Canonical remote CI has not executed tests: latest exact-head upload was refused by the shared BuildTest publisher after a recorded disk-write failure. See linked infrastructure blocker.

Handoff: Finish remote CI for the ContainerNursery HTTPS test fix after publication admission recovers

Updated 2026-10-25 12:35 UTC. PR state and branch heads were re-verified before this final update.

RE-VERIFY: this is a write-time snapshot. Re-read https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/ContainerNursery/pull/748 with gh pr view 748 --repo CodexCoder21Organization/ContainerNursery --json state, headRefOid,mergeStateStatus, statusCheckRollup, mergedAt; inspect its exact-head check runs and the shared BuildTest blocker before acting. No production change, data deletion, restart, deployment, merge or enqueue is authorized by this record.

Design decisions in force

User requirements from 2026-10-25, verbatim:

  • "No reflection, no mocks, no timeout increases, no iteration cuts, no weakening or changing assertions or limits."
  • "Do the work yourself; no other model sessions."
  • "Wait loops need a hard deadline and must be killed before you finish."
  • "Kill processes only by PID and only ones your own runs started."
  • "No notes files in the repo."
  • "Do NOT merge or enqueue."
  • "Record-count issue — do NOT change the 28 limit or any assertion."
  • "Full suite once from the final head: flock /tmp/claude-501/hd22-suite.lock scripts/test.bash --local --test . --log <file> (wait if held). Rebase on origin/main first. Push."

The requested test fix, measurements, full local suite and PR are complete. Only remote CI verification remains blocked by a shared service; this handoff does not expand authorization to production repairs or merging.

Mission and why this work exists

The user asked to finish branch fix/hd22-flaky-https-tls-records in https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/ContainerNursery. Required PR motivation, preserved exactly at the top of the PR:

"On 2026-10-25, while verifying the cleanup-ownership follow-up for https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/ContainerNursery/pull/742, testHttpsFacade_largeChunksAndTrailersUseBoundedTlsRecords failed its first attempt in a full local suite with a connection reset and passed on retry."

What was found and done

  1. L94 had already proven the reset ordering issue: the TLS client closed before the record-counting TCP observer finished, so its closure traffic could race the facade closing its accepted transport. A controlled real-socket fixture fails the original lifetime invariant 10/10 first attempts and passes with the observer wait inside the client lifetime. This is preserved on the fix branch. L94 evidence is at https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/ContainerNursery/tree/wip/hd22-https-tls-records-evidence.
  2. The remaining count failure was option (a), a backend fixture delivery issue. Backend writes were response headers, then separately each 19-byte 10000;mode=binary\r\n line, 65,536-byte payload, and two-byte CRLF, finally the zero chunk/trailers. If the facade drains input between writes, BoundedHttpReader.flushBeforeBlockingRead() flushes pending TlsRecordOutput before a blocking read when reader.available()==0. That is required partial-chunk streaming behavior, not a new facade inefficiency. With data available, output coalesces up to 16,367 bytes, and complete chunks also flush. The existing public partial-chunk test requires available bytes to reach the client while the backend waits for acknowledgement; removing the flush would violate that contract.
  3. Forced real-client acknowledgements after the existing separate writes reproduce the excess deterministically: 10/10 first attempts fail at 32 records, after all payload, extension, trailer and EOF checks pass. No sleeps, load generators, mocks or reflection are used. The backend now assembles the entire HTTP chunk and writes it once. Acknowledgements remain after each write, so splitting the chunk into three helper calls again recreates the same pauses and failure. Original assertions and the 28-record bound are unchanged.
  4. L95 measured direct first attempts with 2,000 calls, concurrency 8, 64 MiB heap and SerialGC per batch, no runner retries:
Source Pass Observer reset Record-limit failure
Unchanged main 1,953 38 9 (29 or 30 records)
Close-order fix only 1,998 0 2 (29 or 30 records)
Both fixture fixes, independent direct compilation 2,000 0 0 (23–24 records)
Both fixture fixes, committed amplifier against fresh checkout artifacts 2,000 0 0 (23–24 records)

L94 independently measured 65 resets plus one count failure in 2,000 main calls and zero resets plus one count failure in 1,000 close-order-fixed calls. These are distinct samples, not contradictory counts.

  1. Official targeted fixed test passed 1/1 on the first attempt. Existing testHttpsFacade_partialChunkStreamsBeforeBackendContinues passed 1/1. Final head was rebased on main, then the requested full local suite ran once under the exact shared flock: 1,080/1,080 test entries and 3/3 build rules passed, exit 0. A final fetch/rebase left the tested head unchanged. Separate test-comprehensiveness and code-review passes found no remaining issues. No product API changed, so no README edit was needed. No notes or build artifacts are tracked.
  2. PR https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/ContainerNursery/pull/748 was opened against main and left unmerged and out of the queue. Its body includes the exact requested motivation, both mechanisms, rates, suite counts, instructions to reproduce the deterministic split-write failure, and its full stack.
  3. A previously empty Kotlin CI suite on this commit was queued for over 47 minutes (created by the earlier checkpoint push). Confirmed zero dispatched runs through GitHub, warmed the receiver three times, and rerequested that never-dispatched suite once. It then created checks; this was dispatch recovery, not a retry of a failed test.
  4. The canonical remote check https://github.com/CodexCoder21Organization/ContainerNursery/runs/121162500638 failed before creating any upload session or sending any source chunk. Request fd1b7e20-23c2-4f95-9b0c-00ee66d62378 made five internal createUploadSession attempts and zero upload attempts. The check's complete stack remains on GitHub. The concrete reported refusal is:
RPC request 'createUploadSessionStructured' failed: INTERNAL_ERROR - RPC error: INTERNAL_ERROR - Execution-duration publication failed for '/root/buildtest-data' while publishing 2 queued events for runs [b95d4f17]: java.io.IOException: No space left on device. New publications are refused.

This proves current publication refusal after a recorded disk-write failure. It does not measure present free space or prove the disk is still full. Why storage filled and how publication admission must recover belong to the existing shared blocker, not this fixture fix. No failed remote test was retried, no host files changed, no deployment or bypass performed.

PR is OPEN at 1d3782c24e9dcc67fd6867f69564d43fc8ef12ae, mergedAt=null; mergeStateStatus=UNSTABLE. Required bld-build and bld-build-release both completed SUCCESS. Downloaded bld-test-results from Actions run 40191073836: XML has 1,080/1,080 successful test entries, 3/3 successful build rules, no retry/attempt entries, and a successful target test entry (1,673 ms). The PR body was updated to include these CI results and the remaining infrastructure refusal.

Canonical kotlin.build (remote) is FAILURE before source upload with the refusal quoted above. Informational kotlin.build (kompile-remote-build) remains IN_PROGRESS, with no real run URL observed. The watcher exited naturally with RED/exit 1 because of the explicit canonical-remote gate, after observing the required Actions success; it is no longer running. All own local suites, amplifiers, and helper commands have completed. No wait loop or watcher is being left behind.

The code and original five brief items are complete. The remaining CI workflow item is blocked on the linked shared publisher effort. No production repair, PR enqueue or merge was performed, and no approval was requested for an unprepared production action.

Deployed or published but not merged

None. This effort made source commits, branch pushes, a PR and CI dispatch recovery only. No production deploy, restart, server edit, uploaded application JAR, or Maven publication command was run. Production behavior remains unchanged.

Evidence intentionally omitted from repositories

Raw local test logs, XML and diagnostic compiler output are under /tmp/L95-evidence/; they were not committed because the user prohibited notes files in the repository and build/test artifacts must not be committed. All source needed to reproduce both conditions is on the linked branches; the measured results and methods are included here and in the PR, and the current blocking error/stack is preserved on GitHub. Prior raw reset evidence is already on L94's linked evidence branch. Local caches, compiled jars and generated certificates are not continuation inputs and must not be pushed.

Next steps

  1. Re-verify the PR's current head, check output, and shared blocker. Do not repeat the local investigation or suite unless source changes or a new failure justify it.
  2. Resume remote CI only after the owning infrastructure effort has restored publication admission and verified recovery. Do not assume that freeing disk alone clears a persisted publisher refusal; do not delete data or restart/deploy services under this test-only authorization.
  3. Once the service works, re-drive the failed remote suite for this exact head once, verify a real build run URL is created, and watch it to a terminal verdict. If tests actually fail, reproduce and fix their mechanism locally before another CI attempt. Do not blindly rerequest the same infrastructure refusal.
  4. Report the final CI outcome and leave the PR open, unmerged, and out of the queue. The user's requested endpoint is an open PR, not a merge or deployment.

Reusable operational knowledge

The committed amplifier is python3 scripts/https-tls-records-amplifier/run.py --attempts 2000 --concurrency 8 --output <fresh-empty-output-directory>. It requires this checkout's compiled target test; run the targeted scripts/test.bash --local --test testHttpsFacade_largeChunksAndTrailersUseBoundedTlsRecords after rebasing if rebuilding is needed. It calls the exact compiled public test function, writes first-attempt XML and full failure stacks, and has a hard process deadline.

To reproduce excess records deterministically, replace writeChunk(chunk) in a disposable checkout with calls to writeChunk for the size line, payload, and CRLF separately. Keep all acknowledgements and assertions unchanged. Expect 32 records and an assertion failure; undo the diagnostic edit to recover 23–24.

Plain build-watchman 0.0.21 with --pr 748 never enqueues; --check 'kotlin.build (remote)' explicitly gates on the canonical remote check in addition to required bld-build. Use tracked execution, a hard outer deadline, and no more than one PR-status poll per minute. Do not leave watchers running at handoff. Do not use --to-merged for this task.

PR description update note: this host's gh pr edit failed with GraphQL: Projects (classic) is being deprecated ... (repository.pullRequest.projectCards). The same authorized body update succeeded through gh api --method PATCH repos/CodexCoder21Organization/ContainerNursery/pulls/748 --input <json-file>, where the JSON contains only the body string. Do not re-run builds or change code for this CLI metadata error. This tooling friction was retained here rather than sent through report-challenge because that skill automatically enqueues and merges a record PR, contrary to this task's rules.
