Supplied GitHub worktrees lacked Git author identity.

What was being attempted: Commit the completed Observable issue 85 documentation changes in the supplied /code/workspace/Observable and /code/workspace/PlanRepository worktrees after validation.

What went wrong: Both git commit operations failed with the exact messages 'Author identity unknown' and 'fatal: unable to auto-detect email address (got helena@1f596c6ef5d4.(none))'. No user.name or user.email was configured globally or in either supplied checkout.

Impact: The mandatory commit and pull-request workflow was blocked even after GitHub authentication had been repaired. Files were staged but no commit was created.

Workaround used: Resolve the authenticated gh account and configure user.name plus the account's GitHub noreply email repository-locally in each supplied checkout, then retry the commits.

Suggested durable fix: Provision /code task environments with a standard Codex Git author identity alongside gh authentication, or configure the supplied worktrees with local user.name and user.email before handing them to agents. Add git config user.name and git config user.email to the repository preflight.

Status: STILL EXISTS. The current image still ships gh 2.23.0. A fresh gh repo clone produced an HTTPS origin whose git fetch failed non-interactively, and neither repository-local nor global Git author identity was configured before this audit.

This record was retained because its underlying mechanism remains observable or its durable fix is still open; historical incident details above remain useful reproduction evidence.
